What is the purpose of revenge?

With all this stuff on 9/11 all I can think is why did they do it? Then you hear that they did it out of revenge. then I start thinking on the whole Israeli Palestinian conflict and I can't help but wonder what the whole purpose is, is it really worth it and does it get you anywhere but in a vicious cycle of hate?

there isn't one

Revenge just leads you into that vicious cycle of hate there is no part of it that can lead to good except through finally stopping. It’s not our place to take revenge. If you do, it just becomes pointless and soon you have wars where no one remembers why they started fighting for in the first place, or even why they fight now.

  yes revenge sometimes is the only answer, for example say some man..murdered your child or someone really close to you...if i had the opputunity to avenge my friend or child i would. Sometimes revenge is the only way to let go of your feelings, once you have made them feel sorry for what they have done. As for 9/11 i think that we should avenge all those people who lost there lives, to not do it would be letting them get away with it in my eyes

  How would you make them feel sorry? By hurting them as they hurt you? How right is that? It might seem right while you are grieving over your loss but it really only puts you on the same level as them. I’m not saying if someone is killed that you shouldn't call the cops or anything, just that it really isn't our place to deal out 'divine retribution' on others. It only makes things worse in the end. Besides, I very much doubt that your loved one would want to become filled with hate and revenge because of their death. If they loved you, they would only what you to be happy not consumed with revenge. As for the whole getting away with it thing, well 9/11 has become an excuse to go about and do as we might please under the banner of ‘justified cause’. In the beginning maybe, but we have lost sight of that which we were initially fighting for, as so may others have done. What are we fighting for now?

  i do agree with what you are saying, hurting someone does basically put you at the same level as you. I didnt mean particulary hurting someone i maeant along the lines of justice..which to be honest i think in England we just dont have any more but thats a whole other subject! But i did nearly lose my aunty in the terriost attacks and she did see her friends die and she does want revenge, i toally agree with her what revenge..its not my place to say what revenge but surely you agree that they should pay for what they have done? And as what are we fighting for now...i think we are fighting for everyone to feel safe in and not feel threatened by those individuals who feel the need to hurt innocent people

  Oh, yes perfectly I have that same problem (spell check is my friend). I do agree about the justice part of it but the whole problem is that justice has been tainted so much by corruption and greed as well as personal gain. You say we fight to feel safe but the problem is that you are forgetting the people who live in those areas that are in this dubbed "war". I’d bet they sure don't feel very safe. The thing is that people so quickly make blanket judgments and rash decisions that things get out of hand and before you know it, you're in deeper than you can handle. This "war" is like that. We’re in it and we may never get out. People’s homes that were once safe have now become the center of bombings and death. What justice is there in that?

  I agree that it's important to have justice but I don't think that's the same as revenge. I don't believe that people should go unpunished but when you go down the "revenge" road, everything becomes so vicious and it's all for the sake of retribution rather than deterrance or reform. Revenge for the sake of revenge makes the world a much worse place than if it had never happened and I really don't see the point inc reating more misery out of something bad. Besides, it's hard to be objectively just when you start getting involved in revevnge.

Death has only one agenda.

Getting involved in a cycle of revenge will only lead in one direction. Every person you kill will create 10 new enemies to seek revenge on you. Being the one to hand out revenge (however justified it feels) never makes you feel better - you just end up with an emptiness inside. Justice on the other hand, is best distributed by someone impartial to the conflict. Punishment handed out by the wronged will never be accepted by the punished. Revenge is often dressed up as justice, but it is a poor disguise.

revenge is a disease, It hurts everyone involved...revenge is only thought " necessary" by a person who is feeling they have to prove somthing to someone or themselves

Speech to city council and public
Ladies and gentlemen of the hell's-ville city council, friends, hell-villians, countryfolk: lend me your ears. I am here today to defend my family from the petty accusations of our dear friend and neighbour, Annete Flunk Goober. First, let me establish for the record that until recently, we Peytons and our neighbor Ms. Goober had enjoyed friendly relations. We would greet each other with a "Good morning!" or whatever appropriate for the time of day. We would even visit her at her porch, and a couple of times she has come to our porch to talk. I'm still grateful to recall how she kept our computer once when we were on vacation. So it is with sadness and a feeling of being betrayed that I come to this meeting today, to try to defend us from these surprising and false charges. I would like to show that the present accusations have been made in the spirit of revenge, because we protested her surprising move to allow a man into our yard, who chopped our grape vines down to the stock, and even cut the wood stock in two places. If the grape vines touching our neighbours' fences were a problem, no one ever told us about this, neither Ms. Anise Douche, nor Ms. Fannette Goober. I would have gladly cut the tips of the vines, and kept them off her fence if she had only asked me. When we inquired why she had done such a thing, she did not act apologetic, and told us she did not know of the extent of the yard man's damage. But why did she not ask before hand for permission, if she and the other neighbour she said provided the yard man, wanted to do us "the favour" of hacking half our grape vine and spraying weed killer three feet into our property line? She has complained that our boxes of books under the car port are causing her problems. She has said that they are unsightly. For all I know, she may even complain about the metal that I occasionally set in places, although as carefully stacked and arranged as I can, and left only temporarilly, a few days before I can haul it away to the recycling yard. First, the most serious, that the boxes attract roaches. We have inspected our purchases of books when we get them. We don't want roaches either. On occasion, yes, we have found a few. However, our house is treated for roaches, and so, I imagine is hers. I suspect the roaches that Ms. Goober is seeing are the large water bugs that crawl into many folks home. These are not the kind that live in homes, and soon die after finding their selves trapped inside. Certainly, my wife and I are clean people. My wife is German, a conscientious housewife, and doesn't tolerate dirt. She even makes us take our shoes off before going indoors! She looks at the goods at the auction before bidding on them. And if she were to find roaches of any "nuisance level" in the boxes, she would immediately treat the boxes. But perhaps the clincher is that at NO TIME WHATSOEVER HAS MRS GOOBER SEEN FIT TO TELL US OF THIS PROBLEM. If she thought there was a problem, why did she not tell us? We have always been polite, friendly, and honest in our relations with her. Why could she not be the same? If this complaint be about the eyesore of the boxes beneath the carport, then let me tell you, this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. First of all, our boxes our packed, neatly stacked, and in order under the car port. Secondly, we have, after receiving the orange ticket on our door knob the day after we complained of the savaging of our grape vine, met with the code enforcement agent, Mr. Bland, and shown how we have met with every point on the ticket, which were three: grass mowed, which we have done, though it was not ovely so when the police came to address our complaint that Mrs. Goober had let the man in to cut our grapes, weeds trimmed, and nuisance, which was not defined but later mentioned as the books under the carport. Mr. Bland expressed satisfaction at our efforts, and only added that he suggested we cover the carport with tarps and remove the excess objects from the porch. We did so immediately. As I said, this is the pot calling the kettle black. In the back yard of Ms. Goober, behind the shed, there is plainly visible a rusty old swing set, an old barbecue grill, and an aged, rusting barrel. As for Ms Goober's windows, two of them are covered with unsightly white garbage bags, taped willy nilly to the glass. It is time we set aside our grievances, forgive each other, and live and let live. In a community where there are scores of abandoned and neglected houses, over-run with kudzu, honeysuckle, wisteria, and other weeds, where abandoned lots grown with ragweed and other hayfever sources abound, where drug dealers brazenly ply their trade, even where prostitutes mozy back and forth, let us not worry each other with petty and false accusations and libellous gossip. Let's work together to heal our wounds, remove our divisions, and together rebuild a better Hellsville.

No purpose

There is no purpose of revenge. It is just personal satisfaction as Subway noted. It doesn't change anything. Scenario: If someone murdered a loved one, and that relative wants to get revenge, then it doesn't change anything because that person would still be dead. Revenge does not solve anything. It doesn't change anything.
