If someone without a doubt believed something, would it be true?

So I want to know people's opinions on the truth of things. Less vaguely, I want to know that if someone believed something deep down, within their very soul, would it be true?

  • ummm... I think not.

I believed in Santa deep down with my whole soul when I was little. Didn't make him real.

What about when two people have fervent beliefs that contradict each other? Someone could believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is a god, while someone could believe just as fervently that god doesn't exist. Doesn't work that way.

  • truth

It is okey to believe something is true if there is no evidence it is false and if you feel it is the most reasonable explanation. However, you should always be ready to revise your acceptance of a "truth" if it is disproved by new evidence.

  • ah huh

Seeing is seeing. Knowing is knowing. Believing is believing. Any amount of belief does not make something true. Having "no doubt" about what one believes only indicates an entrenched view. If this is so then the undoubted belief only requires more vigorous defence. In effect, war.

  • Of course not

What about when you walk into something or trip? You weren't expecting that. You 100% believed you were just going to walk over to the kitchen and grab an ice pop with no phyiscal interuptions.

What about when your partner dumps you and you totally didn't see it coming?

What about going to the movies or something, and it turns out that movie isn't out yet even though you totally swore it was?

  • It depends...

It depends on what the belief is, and the state of mind the person is in. If I went over to a light switch, and flipped it, and the light went on. That the light is on would be an absolute certainty, and anyone who would deny it would either be blind or insane. It a simple, closed end, yes or no question. These types of question, ones that are based on either yes or no answers, based in physical reality, can be answered with certainty. Beyond that, you begin to tred on thin water, and answers become more relative, despite what a person believes. All metaphysical questions are relative, because we have nothing to gauge them by, it's all speculation then.

  • No

No more so than believing without a doubt something is not true, makes it not true

  • Seeing is believing...?

My opinion at this point is that yees, if you were to completely believe something without a single shred of doubt in your mind, that it would be true. But the problem is, there is hardly anything that anyone fully believes in. So if you were to even have a tiny shred of doubt in your mind, the thing you believe in may be false. Otherwise it would be true.
