Why Marriage?

I Believe.

I believe that marriage was created by God and is a God plane relationship. I believe it pictures (looks forward to) the marriage of Christ to His bride (the elect) at His second coming. Ergo, it is a spiritual relationship. But that is my opinion. I look forward to the responses to: Why Marriage? What do you believe and why?

  marriage, if married for the rights reasons is a wonderful bond, that should encourage, uplift and support each other, in a continues walk with Christ who gives the ultimate demonstration of a loving relationship, with patience, kindness, tenderness, care, compassion, honesty, forgivness and a passion to put each other above individual selfish desires.

  I agree with Kazrith in that it 'Was' a way for men to control women. Other than dragging them around by their hair. People these days either commit too easily or don't try hard enough. "if married for the rights reasons is a wonderful bond, that should encourage, uplift and support each other," Totally agree but sometimes inexperience or love can make you blind which causes no end of problems.

  I'm with Kazrith and Applehead. It has, of course, evolved since then. If you want your marriage to be religious and spiritual, then have a ball. Thinking that it was created by God for Christ reasons is a little odd. It's been around for some time, long before even Moses' time, and existed in other cultures like Asia, Europe, etc before any concept of Judaism, Christianity, or even monotheism was something many people had heard of.

  marriage is not limited to the christian faith, but is preformed throughout a wide range of faiths. so techniquely, your not really walking with _just_ christ.

  Your right Kazrith, when you say marriage is not limited to the Christian faith. But what I was saying was not what “faith” marriage is limited to, but what it was meant to be. Regardless whether something has evolved, if God was the foundation of humanity, it would only make sense to say that God was the prime example on how not just to live individually but to live with one another as well. Even though we may not live accordingly with one another in our lives, it does not mean we cannot strive to become better individuals to the standards God originally intended. I understand that there are those who disagree religion wise, but if you disagree with the list I made of ways we must treat one another, regardless of who treats who, I doubt success in any true relationship will happen.

Marriage is a contract between two people who will be sharing their lives together. It protects each partner against exploitation or abuse. If people want to believe it also represents a spiritual union or the marriage of Christ, that is their prerogative.

To Force a Couple to Look After What They Brought Into This World

Marriage is around because love is not. If one truly loves another human being beyond physical posessions then a contract to force them to stay together is not necessary. Of course, children play the critical matter in marriage. Marriage forces responsibility.

Marriage is simply a contract so that men and women stay responsible to a helpless, defenseless child.

Umm, doesn't divorce negate your point completely? Especially in America, where nearly 50% of marraiges end in divorce, i might add.

Divorce is the truth. Too bad people don't see the truth about divorce, and it is this: MARRIAGE IS TEMPORARY. My, my, isn't that a revolutionary idea. Marriage is not for life. How can you make a promise today that you will FEEL the same about your spouse 50 years from now?!! What are you, on drugs-- oh no, that's right, your high on society and religion and the institution of marriage. Divorce has said it all. The people, 50%, have spoken and they have said that marriage is for how long it lasts. IT IS NOT FOR LIFE. It is only for the LIFE OF THE RELATIONSHIP.

im not married, i don't want to be married, and i don't approve of the institution of marriage.
As far as im concerned, a relationship lasts 5 minutes to an hour, perhaps two if im feeling verile (is that the right word? verile, vertile, virial? whatever).

I've been with my hunny for five years, technically were common law. But I don't need a damn ring to tell me I'm married to him. Thats just some word someone created one day in my opinion. Whether were married or not doesn't mean I love him any less

You are right mudgod. Marriage is a spiritual matter and should be handled solely by the church. The state should stay out of the churches business. Also the state should admit it’s error and nullify all the marriages it has mistakenly created up to this point.

At first I laughed and said "Heh, good one bob" Then I saw you did vote with mudgod's post. Are you purposely going to some sort of extreme just to be comical? If not... WHICH church? Marriage was around before Christianity and Judaism. It likely was always tied to some form of religion upon its conception, but limiting it to "Only religions can decree it" means nothing, as anyone can get married as long as whatever religion they say they are backs them. All it excludes is atheists, and even they could argue there stance against religion is a religious choice. Furthermore, without state approval the marriage (finally) means nothing other than "I love this person and wish to spend my life with them". I am not against this stance entirely, but surely you understand this means quite a world of difference in settlements of couples who separate, arrangements for kids, homosexual marriages, and so on. *The state should stay out of the churches business.* And the church should stay out of the state's business. Though sometimes church morality can coincide with state matters, and state matters can coincide with church business.

WHICH CHURCH exactly weydon, as it stands now the churches and the state do this elaborate dance every time the question of marriage comes up. The churches say that marriage is a thing of god unless we are talking about a church that wishes to marry gays such as the Unitarians or the UCC. Than they fall back to the position of the state must be able to regulate marriage through marriage certificates. But it is more insidious than even than that; the state regulates churches through tax exempt status bestowing most favored status on churches that they think will toe the line. The Unitarians are not bothered by this unholy hypocrisy because several past presidents were members. If marriage is a thing of god than fine the state should have no regulatory powers and no opinion on who any church sees fit to marry. If however marriage is a thing of the state designed to supply the state with an unending supply of front line solders than the church should have no opinion on who any state decides to marry ie. Mass.

Lots of truths and uncomfortable positions, sometimes needed many times not. The most important thing about marriage should be the love and devotion. I feel the state should be involved because of the legal nature of what happens after separation, as well as some privileges like visitation and shared income etc . Aside from that I feel the only limit on marriage should be being of legal age of consent.

As I'm not Christian, I don't feel marriage has to be performed in a church under 'God's eyes' or anything like that. To me it's just a way of legally becoming my boyfriends property in a sense. Taxes, in other words. We're married to share taxes and borrow each other's credit cards. But, it is more. It's a deep emotional bond that isn't set until you are 'lawfully wed'.
