Truth is Islam is no better or worse than other religions and every thing you said about Islam could be said about Christianity. You see all religions have the same problem they are made by men. While Islam converted parts of three continents by the sword Christianity did the same thing to the whole world. Btw it’s not Islam that drives converts away from Christianity it’s zealots no offence intended

I am always curious when I see a debate like thisHow many of us who would judge any religion have actually read and studied the basic text the religion was formed from in detail?12% Voted for by Violet Moodswing, Mairi-Alannah, SenseiRidgway, GinryuStargazer.
By detail, I don't mean sitting in front of another human that we expect to interpret things for us because we are too lazy to read it ourselves from cover to cover more than once and make an intelligent decision. -
How do you know?9% Voted for by Stella Cadente, bob2314, Southern Twilight.
There are as many Christians that do immoral things as Muslims. Why do you have to categorize people based on their religious belief?
JUST BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN SOMETHING, IT DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT. IT MAY BE RIGHT FOR YOU, BUT NOT FOR THE REST.
And if you are an Islam-expert, then you have the right to give opinions like this. Christianity hasn't done anything for the world either
. The only thing religions have done to us is bring conflicts and chaos. -
Islam has done nothing for the world6% Voted for by Bless, Dwn.
right from the beggining. ishmael the forced birth is technicaly the father of islam ,his birth was a mistake . at no point in the bible did anything good come from disobeyin god. mohamed a rapist murderer and dictator who used the qu'ran ( a badly plagerised bible) to justify his evil acts .Islam is one of the many tools of the devil , apears to be peaceful and loving but deceives away from the true lord christ . I mean no offence but the truth is not always complementary

Why do you think Islam is evil? It is not! Islam is a religion, with their own beliefs. They have the right to believe their own religion.

A red herring argumentVoted for by asgrey.
It is true that the Old Testament contains violence but the fact is neither Judaism or Christianity were ORIGINALLY spread by violence, (The Crusades came later, whereas Mohamed actually spread the faith by violence).
The fact is, I agree there may be parts of Islam which are evil, but we cannot argue the point by suggesting terrorism, etc. because in the same way as the IRA are extreme and hypocritical followers of Christianity, these suicide groups etc. are extreme and hypocritical followers of Islam.
If you seek to criticise a religion, do exactly that - criticise the religion and not the followers.

Read the KoranVoted for by chrisky1.
I am a christian, but under Mosaic law, we must be aware of other religons and respect them. The Koran follows much of the Judaic texts that we do excluding the prophetic books after the first 5 of Moses. In order to understand each other, we must stray from fundamentalism and dogmatic persecutions which lead to hatred which Jesus proffessed against. Becareful when smashing ones religon. Pray for your enemies and they will no longer be enemies

Islam and the Dark AgesVoted for by Dwn.
Unfortunately, Islam has adopted some of the more violent and irrational parts of the Old Testament which Christians have replaced with the New Testament. The Koran and Shania laws prescribe the death penalty for adultery, disrespectful sons and daughters, leaving Islam for another religion, criticizing Islam, and a number of minor offenses. Islam is an aggressive religion that, in the past, converted infidels with force (become a Muslim or die). Islam opposes the separation of religion and the state and, consequently, is opposed to secular democracy. Its extensive laws affect every area of a person’s life and it doesn’t tolerate change. Because of this, Islam is stuck in the dark ages and is incompatible with the 21st century. The increasing gap between the modern age and a dark age’s religion exasperates the feelings of alienation among Muslims.

Right...Honestly, I don't think that any religion is TRULY evil; except the people that force it unto others that make the religion evil.Voted for by GinryuStargazer.

?!?!?!Having read through all the comments here, I am appalled and disgusted, especially the comments from the usual christian fundamentalists (you know who you are). Christianity has committed so many acts of barbarism that far out weigh the evil acts a minority of muslims have done over the centuries. Let's see, witch burning, spanish inquisition, catholic protestant divide, crusades, bombing of abortion clinics, KKK and neo nazi groups.Voted for by wurzalgnu.
The whole reason that christians tend to have this pathetic superiority complex stems from the the old European Imperial attitude which is basically racism.
I can't see why the abrahamic religion can't be a bit more like the eastern ways and be accepting of each other. But then i suppose thats like asking a child to be an adult!
The abrahamic religion needs to learn it must grow and mature in order to accept the fact that there are many different paths to get to god. It must also accept that the different aspects of it all came from the same place but from slightly different cultures which will explain the differences between them.
Do you honestly think christianity is as it was first envisioned? Of course it isn't. It became westernised and corrupted by power hungry men who saw the potential of having control of people through a religion.
Jesus said love your neighbour and if christians are meant to obey this law to get to heaven well seems like most of you are going to burn! -
You're wrongIf you do beleive in god... You're wrong.Voted for by s0cialNME.
My opinion on this cannot be better expressed than by a song by NOFX.
Everybody (especially christians) should listen to "You're Wrong" by NOFX. You can find it on you tube. -
Depends...In honest opinion, I think religious texts can give wonderful morale. I've been raised as Crhistian, and I've read much of the bible out of pure curiosity. Many of it is good morale, I mean out of date (the gender thing, for example) and some of it is just plain wrong (the real meaning of the word "demon", for example) but if you consider it evil then that's just because of your beleifs; what exactly is good and evil? It's outlined by what you believe in. Some people think not worshipping god is really bad; apparantly some don't think that at all. Really, it depends; if you think it's evil, then alright. If you don't think Islam is evil, then good for you; because obviously, Muslims don't think it's evil.Voted for by GinryuStargazer.

The sword?
I would like to know how Christians did the same thing to the whole world. And if you are going to come at me with the crusades or the Spanish inquisition you need a history lesson. I may as well go ahead and tell you. The crusade was started in 1095 to Combat Turkish Muslims that where killing people and burning down cities of those that didn’t convert by the sword. So it was in the defense of freedom for everyone to have a choice that the crusades where started. And then there is the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 this one is a bit of an ugly spot but the fact is that no Doctrine backed up these actions. Spain’s rulers in the latter part of the fifteenth century, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, believed their country would prosper only if it was truly Christian. Because the showed great devotion to Catholicism, they received the title Catholic Kings from the pope. In 1478 they asked the pope to establish the Inquisition in Spain themselves as Inquisitors. And from here they went on to throw everyone out of the country that had different Christian beliefs than they did and eventually Killing over it. But this continued until 1572 all over the world but it was not converting by the sword it was a war between to sections of the same religion. So to say that Christianity was converted by the sword is nothing but a blatant lie.bob2314

Which do you prefer the rack or the sword?
All of Europe, Mexico, South America, the witch burnings, the crusades were more about a land grab than anything else, not to mention what the Catholics have done to the Jews in the past. In the words of Denial Patrick Moynihan you are entitled to your own opinion not to your own facts.bob2314

all religions had been altered and added to over time BY MAN so how can man accept facts from men just like them that say they are messengers of god. Well for one, i could say those people belong in an asylum. And second, if some person made an attempt to add thigns to the bible saying he is a messenger of god, he would be immediately sent to psychological help. But that didnt happen long ago, and therefore people believe them. Where as today, nobody would believe anybody. In the future i have a feeling those people will believe the people today just because they were people of the past and probably were messengers of god and what not. its all funny, ammusing...and interesting as to how stupid people are today.January 5, 2007

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: BOB 2314 WILL NOW ATTEMPT TO GIVE HIS OPINION ON LIFE THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING. SO IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO… DO IT! IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT BOB 2314 DON’T KNOW @#!$. ANY ATTEMPT FOLLOW HIS ADVICE COULD LEAD TO YOU WRITING LETTERS HOME IN CRAYON.In order to understand this post you have to know what was going on at the time. This post was in response to another post “is he satin” which was first added after the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon.
Tempers ran a little high in that post and in this one. One poster had the gall to call ME wrong. My post was an attempt not only to prove him wrong but to rub his nose in it. It seems on reflection I may have a teeny tiny temper too. My views on religion are this: it is false, it is a waste of time And it will disappoint you 9 times out of 10. Now having said that I also conceder myself a Christian. A contradiction! I don’t think so. You see I looked around at all the pain and suffering that religion has caused through the years and I have come to the conclusion that this can’t be God’s plan. So I have formed my own religion of two.
Of which I AM THE JUNIOR PARTNER.
sometimes you have to exit a topic then reenter to see your comment. lol we have all done this
I saw 24 comments on one of my posts and I thought I was going to be tarred and feathered lol.

On a more general point: The whole discussion seems to miss the distinction between theology/theory and practice, that is, it may have been common for Christians - in practice - to convert others by the sword, commit massacres etc. but it was certainly not sanctioned by the tenets of their faith (though, of course, this gets complicated because of the Pope :-) whereas Muslims may have done the same things (the estimate in India is around 60 million slain) but in this case conquest and conversion (conversion or death for "pagans" conversion or conquest for Jews and Christians) by the sword were (and are) sanctioned by the religion itself, at least in its more common interpretations, eg. Muslim sociologist and historian ibn Khaldun writes: "In the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and (the obligation to) convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force. (The Muqaddimah: an Introduction to History (abridged), trans. Franz Rosenthal, Princeton UP, 1967, p.183)"
I would not, however, agree that Islam is a 'religion of evil' because there is much that is good, and much that is neutral in it - however, it is a religion of war (called 'struggle') whose only vision of peace comes through its complete domination of others.

Q.2. What about verses in the Qur'an that encourage you to kill non-believers wherever you find them?
This is a question that often comes up in critiques of Islam, especially in light of recent political events. It is incumbent on Muslims to respond to and clear misconceptions stemming from Islam's perceived stance on violence and interfaith relations.
The Importance of Context
The word ‘context' has two dictionary meanings:
• The parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect.
• The set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc.
Any discussion on Qur'anic verses that refer to violence would be meaningless, without a study of the surrounding context. Before we study the verses in question, therefore, let us examine this issue in a wider perspective:
The Sanctity of Life
The Glorious Qur'an says:
“…take not life, which God hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.”
[Al-Qur'an 6:151]
Islam considers all life forms as sacred. However, the sanctity of human life is accorded a special place. The first and the foremost basic right of a human being is the right to live. The Glorious Qur'an says:
“…if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.”
[Al-Qur'an 5:32]
Such is the value of a single human life, that the Qur'an equates the taking of even one human life unjustly, with killing all of humanity .
The Verses of War
The words that often causes consternation among those unfamiliar with Islam, is:
“…and slay them wherever ye catch them…”
The truth is that this is only part of the verse 191 of Chapter 2 of the Qur'an. Let us read the verses 190 to 191 in order to get a complete picture:
“Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.”
[Al-Qur'an 2:190-191]
It is a well-known fact of Islamic history, that fighting against aggressors was prohibited during the first thirteen years of the Prophet's mission. After Muslims migrated to Madina , the verses above were revealed to enable the community to fight in self-defense. The verses that follow clearly indicate Islam's prohibition on aggression and inclination towards peace:
“But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression.”
[Al-Qur'an 2:192-193]
The verses above specifically refer to fighting against oppression and in defense of religious freedom as the Glorious Qur'an says:
“Let there be no compulsion in religion”
[Al-Qur'an 2:256]
Fair-dealing towards all
When read in context, the above verses do not even remotely suggest an exhortation for Muslims to be vicious or hateful towards people of other faiths. Far from this, the Qur'an actually requires that Muslims conduct themselves with fairness and dignity in all matters, and especially in regard to interfaith relations, as indicated by the following verse:
“Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.
