God: All powerful being, or security blanket?

Security blanket30% Voted for by hollowandconfused, Stella Cadente, Lost one, Oral Fixation.
To me, God started out as a way to explain things people didn't understand. It evolved into fear and out of control worship. Really, all religions started out as cults. Yes, even Christianity.

You asked a question:
***Do You Really Have To Believe In God***
but you did not say for what? Do you really have to believe in God for????????? For you to get to heaven, have friends, do the dishes or what???? I'm not sure what you are asking so I don't know how to answer you exactly.

Needs are not universal, they always have a 'for'15% Voted for by TeChNoWC, achingsoul.
A need, ought, have to; all of these things (aside from determinism and compulsion, in that it is unchangeable, we refer here to if choice is imminent) are only conditionary. One does not HAVE to eat food. One does not HAVE to drink water. You can stop (compulsion aside). But if you do, seemingly, there is a consequence. You will die. So, it is not that food is a universal need, but food is a need FOR survival.
We can talk of hypothetical universal needs, but such things, as I understand, don't even have a clear definition, even in theory and hypothesy.

I was going to quabble about the question of the question but I think you are right EB... One does not HAVE to believe in God unless they want something. That something may not be necessarily be material. Do you really have to believe in God to be a follower of certain religeons? Yes. Do you need to believe in God period? Well that goes back to why you would ask the question in the first place. Recently people have been toying with the idea that "God" isn't anything that we will ever understand. That maybe God is not anything humanlike (although the bible states that we are in God's form)maybe God is an idea. My brain hurts from asking this same question and because I do not belong to any religeon I would answer NO. I don't HAVE to believe in God. It is a choice and I like to think that God is out there in some form and is watching over me at all times.

we are not the boundaries of realityVoted for by slder4crst.
i think it is a major misconseption to think it actually matters whether we believe something to be true or not. whether i believe in a God or not does not make God any more or less real. the reality weather God exists does not revolve around the synapses of human individuals. if God exists it's because he is independant of our human boundaries.

i think that if god wanted us all to believe in him or her or whatever then he could have made it so we did.because if we actually were created by him then he should know that we aren't perfect.religion is one big opinion and god expects us to have an opinion

I have no reason to beleive He is there
I see no proof, and I have no feelings to convince me he is there. He is a common idea formed to explain things that we didn't have answers for a long time ago, and now he is an excuse to deny the facts that are presented every day.Stella Cadente

"origin of life"
Ok ya'll, I need an answer to this question. Science can recreate the atmosphere that was believed to have been present, they can make amino acids. But have they been able to create a living cell Jonathan Wells, PHD, PHD, stated “that you can not make a living cell.” “There’s not even any point in trying. It would be like a physicist doing an experiment to see if he can get a rock to fall upwards all the way to the moon.” Ok so this is my dilemma if the most intelligent beings that have ever lived on the earth can not create just one living cell with all of the "knowledge" that they now have. How is it that it could just happen over and over to get things started? You are correct I believe in God because of things that can not be explained by science. But also by what can. Science has done one thing for me and that was proving that there is a God. I would suggest that you look at science to prove that there is a God and not to prove that there isn’t. You might be starting another post, “HOW COULD I HAVE EVER BELIEVED THAT THERE ISN'T A GOD”. And last don’t ask strangers to prove God to you LET HIM PROVE IT HIMSELF. God BlessEnergizer Bunny

I agree.
I agree that God is a security blanket, that he was invented by the minds of men and women alike to explain things that were not explainable at that time (and some have yet to be explained), and that God was invented to give us a purpose in life and infinite optomism. Bacteria coming from Mars is a proven possibility. I tend to lean towards that senario more than it originating here, although each senario is equally viable...I've got to say, though, we are given a purpose by nature, instead of God, and it is the purpose every living thing strives for: To establish itself and live. We are born, we grow and learn, we eat, we love (feel emotion), we reproduce, we care for our young until they are old enough (eighteen being the age set by ourselves as abstractional-thinking beings), and we die, and there in the ground (if we so choose a burial) we decompose and feed the green earth. The circle of life. The universe unfolds the way its fate decides. As every action is performed, a reaction occurs. Only one action was taken; we're results of it.November 14, 2006
