Why are farts so funny?

Why is it that farting is so humourous? I know a guy who doesn't care and just farts in the middle of conversations, just like people yawn or sneeze. What is it about a pocket of air escaping from your colon? Is it the sound? The idea? or the Smell?

Because

They represent a departure from discretion. The humour also masks one's insecurity of the unpleasantry of being a crap machine.

  Something is funny when a secret becomes obvious. The secret was that you had gas in your ass, and then it became audible.

  That is also another likely scenario, however, there would have to be more involved than the simple revealing of a secret. Revealing secrets can produce a variety of different emotions; it doesn't have to be laughter. In most case you will find that it induces aggravation, excitement, intrigue, dumbfoundedness or even shock. When your wife tells you she has been having an affair with the next door neighbour, your first inclination will not always be to laugh.

  They sound funny! P.S.- when a fart is loud, then it doesn't stink; but if it's silent (also known as the "silent killer" or the "silent bomb")then it does STINK.

The wide variety and punctualty

We have the variety. The snapper is that one that turns from a bubble and then pap! Always a good thing to end that awkward silence or to make one worse. The machine gun, when you're sitting on a lamenated bench, and it sounds like pratatatatatatatatatata and and anyone else can feel it. Then theres the drunken ghost. Worse smelling then the Silent but Deadly and sounds like oooooooOOO pwuernt. Then theres the standards, you have your normal sounding and your sbd. And its alll about delivery. I tell my friend to grab me a soda from the table and then the drunken ghost gets let out! Hilarity ensues. Video games are a perfect time for farts. For me and friends at least. Basicly if you're farting alone its like drinking alone. Very sad and distasteful. But if you're with company and they're cool with it and joining in the fun HELL YEA!

Depends.

Okay, say...I had just started going out with my boyfriend, and we were about a month and a half in. If I farted, I'd be mortified as hell, man...I tell you what, I'd probably shoot myself at that point. A year in and I could care less. If he's willing to put up with my zits, messy hair, period, and other very personal feminine hygene issues that can happen at anytime...What's so bad about a fart? Yea, there's all sorts of things that can turn a person off about my body, like those zits I mentioned. Most guys find it disgusting to have sex with a girl on the rag...But my boyfriend doesn't, and that's what's important. I think we laugh it off because either we're comfortable laughing about it because we're friends and we aren't afraid of each other knowing that, hey, everyone's gotta have a 'BM' as Great Grammy used to say. Being embarassed about a fart is being insecure with letting everyone know that you move your bowels.

Fart on, ladies, fart on. BECAUSE WE DO IT TOO! Ay yi yi yi yi yi yi yi!
