Should genetically modified organisms be used in the US (and elsewhere)?

Too adventageous to pass up40% Voted for by AllDayDreamer, mbbg0.
GMO’s can produce more food, more nutritional food, cheaper food and food that doesn’t need chemicals (or hormones) to be used in the process. As the world population grows, the more food available, and the more nutritious it is (especially in poor areas) will be increasingly important.
It has been so far proved to be relatively safe for consumption, as long as researched first. That is the key, they must not be rushed into. There are some problems with the GMO’s mixing in the “wild” with natural organisms, which could cause problems, but the good outweighs the bad to me.

where will it leadVoted for by Bob the Elder.
we don't know what it can or will do. what if a modified plant turns out to have some unforseen changes. which are really bad. and we can't take it back... or a plant so strong it can wipe out others, ie grows really fast and hard to get rid of, so it becomes like bindweed or something. etc. etc. etc. what could we do by mistake? i don't think it's worth the risk...

Another problem...Voted for by Phoebus.
Agreed. They are much more efficient in terms as produciton and land area required, etc. The problem with GMO's is the economic ramifications of their use. Once a GMO is introduced, farmers can only be competitive if they use a crop that's as efficient. Now, the large corporations that develope GMO's also have intellectual property rights over their use. This means that farmers have to buy rights of their use, and then BUY THEM AGAIN EVERY YEAR. The problem that many have with GMO's is that it leads to corporate growth and total monopolies over large secions of the agricultural market.

not thought throughVoted for by trashed.
the problem with gm foods is that they're not thought through properly, long term. having a whole crop of wheat which is exactly the same genetically, or thousands of acres of the same wheat is fine, but then what happens if the wheat gets sick, for want of a better word? what if the whole crop is ruined? then it won't just be one persons livelihood ruined, it may cause huge problems, depending on the scale the wheat has been planted. also, what if messing around with the genes of something isn't as harmless as the scientists thought? don't you think that millions of years of evolution, trial and error, etc would make something the best it could, or should be? i think messing around with things we don't fully understand is a very bad idea (no, i'm not religious- it has nothing to do with god)

There's nothing wrong with GMO's. Nature does it daily, and who's complaining about that!?March 4, 2005
