    tech, esfuerzo's right. you've missed the point of the song. you may not want to beat your own drum, but the drum of your god, but did it ever occur to you that that drum may be your own drum?
    
    i have my own drum and i can honestly say not very many hands have been beating it but it is my drum and it is a sound i can dance to and live my life in "peace and happiness."
    
    such things are not all found in the same place and it is our mission in life to find it.

    Maybe I have missed the point. But the song to me seems littered with worldly connotations, seems like something a rebellious teenager would say yet just with swear words omitted. I don't like the lyrics. That's my opinion. I am what I am implies a non-compliance with allowing God to change oneself. Pride stands to show that one would have no desire to change. It is self-adoration, and the writer appears troubled. It seems clear to me that the writer experiences the exact opposite in life or there would be no need to write this song. Down trodden, not clear of one's identity and unsure of one's actions and place in life. This song looks as if being used as a spur me on, a self reassurance. It won't last. God is one's self-reassurance. This song reflects worldly techniques of which I am most abhorrent of. Maybe I am being too harsh and religious, I fear myself being hypocritical, so I won't say 'God condemn this' or anything, but this is just how I feel about it of present. Feel free to convince me otherwise, if you wish.

      just look at it this way, where you need god, others need to know that the person they are is okay to be. prime example is a homosexual. god tells them they are discusting where as they are completely fine and nothing is wrong with them

        God doesn't say they are disgusting, only religious people do. I would wager if it is wrong as the Bible MAY suggest, that it is not the person that is disgusting, but the act itself. To identify oneself with an ideation of sex is a wrong example of self. You are you, not an item or affiliation.

    I think you are being too harsh and religious. Mostly because though the song is a reassurance, it's not necessarily a reassurance against ones self but against people that tell them otherwise. If people attack your religion or your God, you say the same things to them. If people attack my individuality that's what I say. I don't believe in what you believe in, but we both have a right to defend what and who we are, and what we believe in. That's what the song is about. By protesting it, you're proving it right.

    not really. I don't necessarily approve of such freedom. I am a slave to the will of God, or at least I try to be. It is individuality that is sometimes my hinderance, and was for a while very destructive.
    
    A murderer does not have the freedom to be who they are. There are always limits. My ideas just push even further these limitations, while others are trying to force them back.

    hmm... tech, did you ever think that this song may apply to you too? what i mean is, you feel that people are pushing you to "be yourself" but you are already yourself, a god-fearing, ect ect man. just because you think of yourself as what everyone should be and they think everyone should be more like them, does in not, in the end, all mean the same thing to everyone??

    I didn't one day instill myself with the fear of God. God did.
    
    This song is vulgar and I don't like it. This is my reaction to it. Why try and find a paradox among that? We are talking of subjective opinion. However, Kari asked if everyone enjoys this song and agrees with the statement that it should be their theme song in life, and I disagree. I despise it.
    
    Find whatever contradictions you like in that, it doesn't automatically make me feel different because of logical glitch.
    
    I think we all realise that the intentions of this song are not to tell someone that they should submit to their inner personalities, but rather they are permissible to be whoever they want to be. If that were true, then we wouldn't have a legal system. THAT is the true hypocritical bullshite among this whole mess. That we can be whoever we are, but once someone does something that we view as wrong, then it is a different story. Make up your minds. We either have enforcement, or we don't.
