Come on. What is Logical?

Why is it that most people don’t know the difference between what is logically sound and what merely sounds logical? Disregarding actual familiarity with the terms, the concepts are such that one could have a rudimentary understanding of the difference without attending a philosophy class, yet most do not. The difference is that if something is logically sound that means it can be broken down and analyzed to verify its truth. Whereas something that sounds logical has likely been said in a convincing, charismatic manner, but cannot neccesarily be broken down to verify its truth. When one accepts something on the basis that it sounds logical, they are accepting it based on their apprehension of the speaker, and not on the facts.

Logic...Voted for by street-crazy.
Logic intercepts common sense. Meaning logic is an occurence when one goes beyond the obvious or sub-obvious. Logic is intellectual and natural. It hits you, it finds you, you don't find it. That is logic.

Logic and Partial LogicVoted for by wbiro.
There are textbooks on logic. I have a few original ideas: Ultimate logic will stand up to all alternate claims and questions. Partial logic is merely the best course of action for the survival of the self and of the species based on the information at hand.

Logic doesn't exist. It can't exist. It is just impossible. I mean, how would you define it? And once it's defined, what does this definition really MEAN? Nothing makes sense if you think about it.

The Psychology Of LogicVoted for by stoneage.
The study of logic must go hand in hand with the study of psychology. Proof is only the rendering of the false, the bringing into light the misconceptions of past logic. I have watched pets and other animals long enough to recognize how closely human behavior is to that of other animals. Motivation for action, even that of a logical argument is most often driven by some much deeper instinct, so the desire to protect ones ideas often becomes stronger than the supposed “logic” of those ideas. To rest all faith in logical arguments is to ignore the much greater power of the human brain. Science is our testing base; that which works is used to figure out what else works, but this is a slow process. The shaman makes contact with the greater accumulation of natural experience, innate and learned. This is where ideas worthy of study should come from. Logic is valuable but it is not enough to unwrap the “true” nature and meaning of the universe.

a distinction
there is a difference between a logically SOUND argument and a logically VALID one. A valid argument need not be sound, but a sound argument MUST be valid. here are two examples: Logically valid argument: if pigs can fly, then i will grow feathers pigs can fly therefore, i will grow feathers the argument here follows logically, so it is valid, but the premisses are not true, and so it is not sound logically sound argument: if you are read this, then you understand my meaning you are reading this therefore, you understand my meaning here, the argument is valid, since it follows upon the conditional (if --> then), and it is also sound, since we can know that the premisses are true and the conclusion as well.March 30, 2005
