What i'd do to protect...
I wouldnt kill, steal, or harm to protect a material object. Although if it was to protect a person who means a great deal to me I may bring harm or kill the others trying to hurt the person close to me but only in the name of defense to the people i love.
For me to kill it would have to be one of thoes if I dont kill the person trying to harm the people i love they will end up dead type of situations. I'd rather take the bullet if i had the chance than to see one of the people that mean the most to me on the ground.
These loved ones i would protect would have to be either the love of my life, parents, or a friend that really means a lot to me. These are the people i cannot see suffer from some lunatics mad desires and would do anything to protect.
Although i have not experienced such a situation, if put in the situation i dont know how i'd react. Would i be too terrified or in shock to act? I can only say what I believe i would do... and what i'd prefer to do if in the situation. The outcome could vary.

Ask me
Once the situation unravels itself. Then is when one can truly know how far they would go, or if they would have the power or even the desire to restrain. I have been in both situations where one would react in a seemingly heroic manner and in contrast, a manner that would be considered plain cowardly. It depends on your reaction. Fight or flight.
Standing still is a reaction hardly heard of. Maybe that's what Jesus would do, he did it on the cross. Depends on the situation though. I'm no Quaker.

...
To protect someone who I knew and who was on my good side I would go as far as needed, kill, burn. As for material objects, I would protect my guitar and skateboard as much as needed up to killing.

I was scarey alright, and I did freeze, but only at first but when I thought about the safety of my loved ones and saw they were willing to protect me at all cost, all my fear dissapeared and I realized that I was not afraid to suffer and die for them, for no other reason but that I loved them.
You'd be amazed what you can do when you are forced to choose. you really learn who you are.
