Isn't world peace impossible?

It has been many a dream for people for many hundreds (and possibly thousands) of years for all nations to co-exist in peace and happiness. However, is such a thing truly possible or impossible?

  • World peace possible? NO
As long as all humans on this planet have emotions there can never be world peace. To be emotional is to be restless.
How can the world be peaceful and restless at the same time?

  • Depends
So long as we continue to say it's impossible, it will continue to be. As soon as we stop dissing the idea and try working toward it....

  • I think it's flat out impossible.
With all the crime and violence going on, I see no signs of world peace ever happening, not even hundreds of years from now. If anything, I think we're getting closer to world destruction with weapons like atomic bombs. Have we not already witnessed the power that even one person can have, like Hitler? Also, with current religions and cults out there, world peace to me seems further impossible. It would only take one person to be violence for others to do the same. Different belief systems have overlapping beliefs and ideals, including some promoting violence in some form. Many may share a Golden Rule of some sort, but it doesn't mean it's followed.

What about the smaller picture, a single nation, or even a city being at peace? Isn't that too impossible? I think the only chance of that is a small village and even then, an outsider could change all that. Now I could be wrong about this, but this is based on what I seen and learned during my times.

Human nature is the main reason why I think world peace is impossible. Are humans not violent by nature? Why do many people enjoy violence in the media so much? Even if it's fictional violence like in action movies or games, people are usually somehow entertained by it. People may not condone it, but it still doesn't change the fact that people generally like the idea of it. That's not to say there isn't people who dislike even fictional violence, but their not the majority, at least in America.

Look at the [something]-isms out there. Did violence and hate against different races, women, people from other countries, and more ended? It may have gotten toned down a lot, but it doesn't mean it will ever end. Now, I'm not saying we couldn't work toward a more peaceful world, I'm just saying I think it's impossible for total world peace to happen.

One more thing, isn't the whole idea of world peace subjective? Doesn't almost everyone have their own idea of what the world should be? There's likely many people who don't want world peace. Concepts like the Master Race seem to prove this. With overlapping beliefs, ideals, and maybe no universally accepted idea of world peace is (not to mention those who don't want it), I think that's why it's impossible, like I mention way more then I wanted to.

only if human individualism, and free will where kept at bay like in a Brave New World. But it would be a price that i would not be willing to pay. Without Chaos there would be no art, and therefore, people would start chaos in order for art to exist. When i speak of art, i am generalizing a lot of things.

i don't think a world of peace can ever be possible, because every single human being is different.and differences cause arguments, and i think that as long as we are all different, the wars, and hate crimes against eachother will never stop.

  • Hobbes & such
Perhaps it's worth pointing out that not too long ago, most of the countries of Europe had been at war with one or more of the others. Now - well, it'd be hugely naive to suggest that we all get along swimmingly, but we're getting by. I'm honestly not sure how significant that is, given that most of the European countries have at least something in common with one another. Could the same be said of the rising powers?

It has been suggested that, while Hobbes' 'state of nature' (the "War of all against all") might never actually have existed among individual human beings, the field of international relations seems to mimic it fairly accurately. So some kind of international social contract (a proper one, not a joke like the E.U. or U.N.) is at least theoretically possible, and I don't think it would require us to all lose our cultures, religions (actually, some people might need to grow up a bit in that particular area, but never mind...), emotions or any of the other massive sacrifices that various folks have suggested would be mnecessary.

The key word there is 'theoretically', then...

Also, if we're giving Hobbes the benefit of the doubt for a moment, then as I understand it, the social contract would be enforced by the strongest available party. From my point of view, none of the potential candidates for that role look particularly attractive Sovereigns now or in the near future...

With human nature there will never be a world wide Utopia of no crime and no violence, hate or prejudice, but I do think it's possible for every nation to be at peace with eachother. When I say at peace I really mean not at war, because there's always going to be prejudices. My reasoning is this: Look at the devoloped, civilized nations; USA, UK, France, Germany, China, Russia, Brazil, ... All the major STABLE nations are at peace with eachother. We may not like eachother, but our governments are stable enough to realize peace is in our own best interest. I think eventually,(hopefully) all nations will be stable enough to stop having wars and use diplomacy. Give it 200-300 years and I think world peace is inevitable.

  • Forgive and Forget
World peace is a beautiful goal and I'd love to truly believe in it, but I just don't think it can happen.

I do think peace is possible for the individual, but not world peace. People always believe things that other people don't agree with, but what really causes wars and struggles is basically the inability of most people to just tolerate things and let them go (they can't forgive and forget, in other words).
My advice (in case you want it): Don't be touchy. Listen to what people are saying and try to find some good in things you don't really agree with. It won't create world peace, but you just might avoid a completely useless argument or two.

What ever happened to one of the most simple philosophy questions ever? Is the glass half empty or half full? I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions because we have free speech, but why are we all so sure that we can not live in peace? I'm no hippy but I am a very tolerant person. Eventually in the future of society and civilization people will have to come together to overcome something so difficult we can not fathom. We will never see it in our lifetime, but it will happen. It happens all the time, just on a scale much smaller.

I also believe that this is not a question of people liking each other. Why do you have to like someone to not hit them in the face? Or shoot them? Peace means that we will not fight each other for personal/political gain. It is possible.

  • Reality
Realistically, World Peace is extremely unlikely, if not impossible. If World Peace were achieved, it would not be sustained for any extended period of time, and would more than likely involve one individual state using it's force to maintain order among lesser states.

Game theory proves this. Cooperation is more costly in terms of security and sovereignty, and defecting allows you to avoid your least wanted outcome and enables the possibility of your most preferred outcome. The reason for all of this is simply human nature, we do cost-benefit analysis, and exploiting one another is often the best choice in terms of risk and benefits.

The problem with this is that all nations, and all people, are inherently unequal, It will always be more efficient for some countries to defect on agreements, exploit another country, and commit war. No nation with superior power will give up that power to the benefit of another nation. The Strong do what they will, and the Weak do what they must.

The real problem is scarcity, so long as nations have scarce resources, they will fight one another. You can pretend the world can all get together, hold hands, and sing Kumbaya. But those people will go to any length to preserve themselves and their way of life, they will demonize and kill each other mercilessly over resources that allow them to continue to live and live comfortably.

Even if you had entirely infinite resources, chances are we would still kill each other over disputes outside of property. It is simply in our nature, Ants commit war against other colonies, mankind commits war against other nations and people.

One last thing, the elimination of Weapons is more likely to cause War than decrease the instances of it. Logic dictates that if nobody else has weapons, you can make weapons and exploit them to your benefit, as they will have no way of retaliating. Those who bend their swords into plowshares, will plow for those who did not.

  • IT IS POSIBLE
If we as human beings tought the next generation hwo to accept people for how they are then world peace can be acheved. But because we do not teach the next generation to accept someone for who they are then it will never come to pass. (Submited by Raven Arora Fire)
