I can never hope to get anyone to convert, for I know when I was an atheist, I was completely hostile to religion. So why do many of you think it is crazy without even opening the book and giving it a shot?

What I think.
For one, I can't quite put a label on exactly how I feel or what I believe in. However, I'll still attempt to explain why religion might be seen as crazy.
Religion can be very controlling, in both good and bad ways. I have a feeling it can be and was used to control people. Rather then having many people think for themselves, religion in a way, thinks for them. When stuff comes up, people will usually turn to their religion for answers. They will say and believe something is right or wrong based on what their religion say, not always based on what they think. It also likely made it much easier to run a government, with the majority having very similar thoughts and beliefs. The government would likely have a hard time controlling a society full of free thinkers.
Fear is another factor. People tend to fear the unknown. So basically, people are scared into doing things that may or may not want to do. "Either you do this you will burn in hell" might be a big factor. Another thing is, back in those days, we didn't have science to prove (or come very close to it at least) how the world work. It was rather easy to believe that some godly force was controlling many parts of the Earth.
Now I'm not saying all people who follow religions can't think for themselves. I'm saying it's possible many let religion do all the thinking for them, rather then thinking for themselves. I believe this based on what I seen and how many times I see people say what they feel about something based on "this/my [religion/god/holy book] says".
Religion also tends to be very subjective. Look at the Holy Bible and see how people are forever debating about exactly what it means. Many people claim to know the truth meaning and the "one true path". It's so easy to get lost in all of this people may not know what to believe.
Yet another reason is, godless people may not want to believe in something and based their life around that they can't prove. Oh sure there are many non-religious things we can't prove, but do people govern their lives around it compared to a god (or gods and goddesses)?
Looking back on history, many acts of violence was done based on religion. Even today signs of it still strongly remain. These could be reasons why atheists think why religion may be crazy.

Was a Christian now I am an Atheist
I have given the bible more of a 'chance' than most Christians, and my biblical knowledge is far above that of my Christian friends, yet I call myself an atheist because I have never experienced God and see no reason to look for something that cannot be percieved, just like i have no desire to go hunting in the woods for flying purple elephants...

If you were once an atheist then you'd know. I am not an atheist but religion is bogus. I have given it a shot many times but it isnt for everyone. Just like homosexuality or blonde hair isnt. Its not worth throwing your whole self into when it might not even be real.

1 cor 1:27
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.
I choose to believe in God therefore I am a fool because I choose to believe in something I can not see . I cannot prove God exists . Neither can someone else prove he doesn't . “I choose” with those two words I use faith then nothing can move me . An atheist chooses to put his faith in his five senses . To him nothing exists beyond the tips of his fingers or the end of his nose. Tell me who’s the real fool?

I've tried
I was raised as a christian, but that was when I was little. I was forced to love god and believe in all the things said in the bible.
So I've given religion a shot, but I don't get why believe in something that isn't there. Plus atheists have a wider range in different beliefs than other religions.

Fear of the unknown possibly
Mainly because they have that choice to be Athiest. God insures us a choice to believe or not to believe. I am not an Athiest, but I must accept their right to choose.
God is not invisible. He is here.
Remember the old addage, "Seeing is believing"?
With God it is usually reversed. "Believing is seeing"

Agnostics don't NOT WANT to believe in God, they just realize they don't know either way.

That's why you have to get over the idea that belief in the unknown is foolish. Rather, it is our only hope.grant
