    No it is not Bible stuff?!

    It is Catholic practice and ritual and actually the Bible does express that works of penance are nothing and bear no change in your eternal life.
    Works should be done out of selflessness and not expected to gain you anything. Not done as a routine or ritual, but done each and every time, from emotional inspiration or selfless love and kindness. To punish ones self by saying hail Mary's for example; wasting your time with those, asa they do no one any good at all, especially any victims that may be involved.

    I agree with frendo in that salvation is a free gift from God. What determines if God will give you that free gift? God has to make a value judgement. He cannot just look at your heart because He knows that the heart is wicked above all else. And we know that faith without works is a dead faith. So we cannot attain salvation with works but by our works we show our hearts intent. We show how well we know God and His ways by keeping His ways. Jesus said to repent (turn around) and be baptized. If we are going the wrong way there must be a right way. Do you know what it is? How can we turn to the right way if we don't know the right way? I think you have to be doing the right "works" in order to be eligible for the free gift.

        Free gifts for being good (the santa philosophy). Of course in order to know good one needs to know bad which requires one to be judgemental. This means that you are judging when you say it is up to "god" to make value judgements. It, therefore, is reasonable for me (due to my reasonable nature) to assume that you are GOD. I am honoured.

    The Bible does impress upon us, Heaven is a free gift, not bought or sold, not according to our works, or else we would have bragging rights running rampant.
    
    God does not attach conditions to eternal life. He asks that you have faith in Him and the saviour Jesus Christ. Automatic into Heaven for that truth upon your heart. That means, that God will know your heart and know that you are sincere in your faith. Simple. The rest of all that is contained in the Bible is just a guide for bettering your Christian journey to that Heavenly eternal life. It all falls into place as you grow spiritually, or in ethics, morals and emotions, sincerety, kindness, mercy, grace, etc.
