  • A small child
Would easily fit on the knee of a passenger.

  • depends.........
    If.....
    * the passenger is a woman, it is likely she may not give her seat easily....

    * ....a man, he mostly likely won't jump in first

*.....a Old man, he wil be the first to give his place

*....a old woman, she will not take the child on board.

(i know these answers may be controversial, but i am placing my bets based on average human behaviour.)

  • I fail to understand
When we speak of self-sacrifice, we fare away from ethics and towards the sane and insane. Martyrdom is not normally seen as grounds for proposing whether or not it was an ethical action. Martyrdom transcends this. The act has seemingly no ethical re-precussions. If someone dies for someone else, you do not evaluate the effectiveness or the need for the sacrifice and then dish out good and bad labels. If they felt the sacrifice was worthy, then it meant enough to them to do so.

  • Utilitarianism
If you take this from a purely utilitarian viewpoint you must ask which has the more to offer. Maybe the man will be an award winning writer whose work will inspire later generations but the kid might just be a junkie when he grows up. Surely, in this case, then the man should be the one to get the seat.

However, maybe the man will go on to commit mass murder while the child becomes a great doctor. In this instance then it is the child that should be saved.

This goes to show that in this instance it is hard to say who should get the seat. Ethically we might argue that the child should get the seat because they have more left to their life but it is how we choose to spend this life that should dictate whether or not we get the seat that will ultimately save us.
