I was contemplating the other day what makes people care about something? The best answer that I could come up with is that if one has something to lose then you care about it. So if someone cares what happens to other people (friends, family, people in other countries, people you may not know(supposing that you are a "caring person")), then are you thinking of what you stand to lose? And if so then is it not more a selfishness than a caring?

everything is selfish
because everything is to accomplish what you want... but if what you want is to help others... that is the question.

Half-Half
I believe that this is a half and half situation. For the most part i believe you are right. But in other situations, i have to disagree. What about the person that you see sitting by themselves. Supposed that you are "caring" then you might talk to them and not let them be so lonely. But what do you have to lose? Nothing, just another person in the passer-by.

SELFISHNESS IS CARING
Selfishness is the act of becoming obsessed or infatuated about something particular that you can't stand to lose. It is something that you care about too much. In my opinion, selfishness is caring to a controlling, unhealthy extent. Selfishness is taking caring to a higher mental state.

we are not altruistic
no one is and if they say they are they are manipulating you into thinking that they care for others over thier own self.
They have to have a motive
