What is wisdom?

Is the sum of the facts we have aquired since birth what makes up wisdom?

Is wisdom more common sense we have learned since birth?

Is it some combination of the two added to the number of years we have lived and what we have witnessed in our lives and the experiences we have come away with?

My belief is in the third statement I have put here. I would be interested in seeing what your beliefs are

  • Application

As far as I am concerned wisdom is the application of knowledge. It is one thing to ‘know’ it is entirely another to apply that knowledge.

From a very early age we start to aquire knowledge and ‘develope’ wisdom. While the knowledge may remain static throughout our lives the wisdow that is derived from it may (and likely will) change as the years progress.

  • Not dependant on age

Wisdom is a gift, not always acquired with age. Wisdom: is always seeing the absolute in any situation. Council, is based on wisdom. Advice, is not. Wisdom is knowing when to say nothing…...............

  • Wisdom is more complex than...

Knowledge. Knowledge does not make a person wise. That is the first thing they teach you in seminary. Wisdom is council. Read how Solomon used his widom.

  • Wisdom leads to peace

Wisdom does not depend on age, and it does not depend on experience. Wisdom is appreciation of the existence we share, and understanding and acceptance of our place within the world.

  • What is your answer?

A close aquaintance of yours, just got a new toupee and it is very noticable! First day out and he asks you how does it look? You know he is very self-concious and shy about his hair, so the question catches you a bit off gaurd. What should you answer? Remember the wise answer gets the cookie.

  • Wisdom:

The realization that you know nothing, and cannot ever really know anything, yet are willing to learn anything and everything that comes your way. Its helping people to help themselves. Its Knowing when to shut up. Its learning to THINK FOR YOURSELF and not GO WITH THE CROWD because its EASY.

Im not sure that being wise has anything to do with age. There are a lot of teenagers, teenagers even that i know that are wiser than any eighty year old.

  • Confusion Between Knowledge and Wisdom

Already I can tell that some of you are confusing what wisdom is and what knowledge is. Knowledge is episteme, meaning that you derive absolutes from particulars, or from logic, or from some other means I have no described. Wisdom is doxa. Wisdom is the ability to judge what is true. This is not to say that you can find out what is true. It is not a discovery. It is simply being given facts that you know the facts are true or false. It is not like if I gave you a theory you could tell me where the contradictions. It is if you could give an opinion on whether it is right or wrong.

I’d like to make this distinction here because so much ignorance is spreading on wisdom being knowledge when we all know that is not true at all.

  • Acceptance

Wisdom is acceptance. Seeing the world as it is and knowing this is the way things have to be, no matter how bad. This is where meditation comes in, too. T be wise is to be able to view things from a non-judgemental point of view, and knowing what to do when you get there.

Once I came up with a theory. “To be wise you merely need to know the difference between smart and wise” or something like that. It isn’t true, not completly.

Wisdom comes from God. God is all knowing. Great people throughout the ages attribute their success to reading the Bible, the word of God.

  • First of all you need to know!!!!!1

first of all wisdom has more to do with experiance than learned knowledge. any one can be book smart and be totally ignorant. wisdom in a nut shell is knowing your self and knowing your surroundings, learning through careful study as well as trial and error. living beget’s wisdom.

  • We can sharpen a knife and learn how to use it but we don't know if the knife and what we cut with it exists.

To quote Frank Zappa “information is not knowlage, knowlage is not wisdom, wisdom is not truth”. Then what is wisdom? Wisdom is like intuition, it is something that grows inside of you getting bigger, not in time but every time you do something new. To quote William Blake “the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom”. Its is the sharpening of our understanding with experience as the sharpening stone if you like. Over each new experience, each sharpening of our understanding, we learn more complex plathways of the world we see and how to navigate them. However like Frank Zappa said “wisdom is not truth”. This is because we don’t know what the “truth” is. We don’t even know why we are here, what we are and even if we infact are!

  • Wisdom is just educated ignorance

Really, it’s that simple. What most people define as wisdom, is what I would call knowledge or education.

I’ve never met a person that I thought to be wise. Only people that knew a lot of things, or had seen much in life. Those things do not make a person wise. It just educates your ignorance.
