in a previous topic, i asked why the right of voting should be taken away from prisoners. I realize how narrow that topic is for people who do not understand where i am coming from! So, in response to that, I wonder what peoples' opinion on the prison system are. Is it fine the way it is? Should it be more directed to rehabilitation? What can be done to change it?

Three R's
My opinion is simple. If you notice with murderers, certain states are none to hesitant to hand out the death sentence, while with drunk drivers, even when it goes as far as vehicular manslaughter, only a revoke on a license and a minimal time in jail.
So why is it that certain crimes, such as theft and fraud, give the maximized sentence leading to terrible lives? Isn't there a better way?
Yes. What people don't understand about criminals is that they don't stop at the threat of gray walls, blue jump suits, and the possible rape. Some even try and go to prison because it's less expensive and better than their own lives.
Most people see criminals as needing punishment, strict and unbending discipline. Yes, they do need this, but only to an extent. That is why i think of RRR (yes, i realize i stole the idea, but roll with me) For criminals to become part of society, they need:
1. Retribution. For each crime, a justifible sentence should be given as an effect to their cause.
2. Rehabilitation. This is the one everyone forgets. There is no prepartion for the criminals to see what they did as wrong on a level different from a scare tactic that says, "If you steal, we stick you in a dank cell." They need to see the effect their actions produce and be brought to an understanding of what is acceptable in society (crime-wise).
3. Re-entry. Criminals need to be given the chance to enter into society again as a member, not an outcast. Once out of prison, most felons are seen as dangerous and disgraceful. They aren't, they are human as everyone else is on the planet. If not shown gracefully back, they may as well commit a crime and return where thy are accepted.
That is my argument on the sake of criminals. They maybe have estranged themselves to society, but who amongst us hasn't.

RT Michaels does have a point, simply punishing criminals does little to prevent them re-offending and in many situations actually increases the possibility of re-offending.
There has been a series of vocal protests in the UK about how criminals are to be treated, many coming from ex-prison officers or those high-up in law and order circles, questioning how effective the current policies are, and what alternatives could be pursued.

The 3 Rs +one
RT: Your insights are great. The 3 Rs to me seem to be a no-brainer. If a convict couldn't fit into society BEFORE committing the crime, how can he or she fit in after being even more DE-socialized?The next R, though, probably needs to be Recovery. I don't know the stats but no doubt lots of crimes are drug and alcohol and other-addiction related.
Left alone to our own devices and mental meanderings, any addict is fighting a losing battle. Bingo. The dis-ease wins, we must have our fix at any cost, and no amount of anything other than a commitment & and support system will stop us from getting it.
Greg did 8 years. Eight years clean. Eight years rehabilitated. Eight years of job training, certificates earned, therapy, etc. in prison. Then, boom, trying to fit back into society in a world entirely hostile to him (even though it maybe have been his own dang fault) and a crack addiction had to be satisfied...
He's back in for life. Petty theiving escalated to bank robbery: (Goggle Gregory Doughty), leaving behind an 80 year old mother, father in a nursing home and emotionally scarred and wounded friends and relatives.
Sometimes our demons are just bigger than we are...
