I do not want to start an uproar. i simply want to know people takes on the two completely opposite yet sometime perceived as co-existing ideas.

both
here it is. fate will put us into a situation but free will gives us a choice in how we deal with the situation.
our choices define our fates and the free will allows us to deal with that fate.

Hmmmm
Our free will determines most of our fate. But said earlier, some things can't be controled, like birth, death, but you can sometimes use your free will to make your fate play differently, or you can use your free will to have a different outcome.

The logic between the two
For this argument, i could easily be swayed to either side of the fence.
For example, i can see free will possible because i am doing what i am doing right now because i want to. I have nothing forcing me. Just as if i wanted to delete the whole page of everything i wrote it could and no one would be the wiser.
However, the flaw I see in this logic is that sometimes i feel as if i am not the one controlling my body. Instinct and reliance on repetition (that is, what I have always done in the past plays out in the present) take over. Or sometimes i feel like there are things i cannot do, like barriers, where i should otherwise be easy. An example of this being, sometimes i drop a pencil, misspell something, or go into a room and of all things mentioned, i don't remember ever even doing something to cause them. I pass it off as a brain lapse but inside i wonder whether it was something else.
The reason i see fate as such a good option is because it leaves room for people to believe in free will and, to an extent, actually participate in a mock free will state. By this, i mean we could do things as we wanted but they would end up the same way (Read The Time Machine for a good example.) For instance, criminals could avoid crimes, but as fate would have it they are falsely accused and end up in the slammer just as they would have had they committed a crime.
So basically, i see it as this: Free will gives you the choice, Fate gives you the excuse.
So i want to know, what's your opinion

The spiritual aspect
Hazrat Ali Murtaza (peace be upon him), who is also called as 'the river of wisdom', 'pioneer of spiritualism', 'the gateway to both heavenly and worldly knowledge and vigilance' ( and the cousin and son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad peace be upon him)has very precisely made distinction between fate and free will. Someone asked him about fate and free will. The holy saint Ali replied him that he could lift his one foot from earth to keep standing out of his free will, but if he lifted the second foot, he would fall down. Thus, man has some powers to exercise his free will, though Nature does not allow him do everything out of his free will. It is therefore we do not have control over the selection of life, death, children, parents, fame, honour, money etc. We can only make struggle; the fruit of which is up to our Lord!

Fate can be overcome - let's see how
According to Spiritual Research, in the current era an average person has 35% free will and 65% destiny (fate). Fate is that part of our life which we cannot change for eg: birth, death, marriage, major accidents, major illnesses etc. Destined events happen because of our actions in our previous births. Of course, destiny (fate) can be good or bad depending on our actions in the current or previous lifetimes. "As one reaps so shall one sow" is the best way to put it.
Free will is that part of our life that we have control over. For eg: the school that we go to, friends that we have etc.
However, a point to be noted is that Fate can be overcome by Spiritual practice. Spiritual practice of chanting the name of God (as per your religion of birth) helps to nullify or reduce your fate. I suggest you visit this website for more info on fate and destiny, the purpose of our birth etc http://spiritualresearchfoundation.org/spiritualresearch/difficulties/destiny/index.php and http://spiritualresearchfoundation.org/spiritualresearch/spiritualfacts/.

Fate does not exist
i think we all choose our destiny, you´re choosing to read this arnt you? now if you were disturbed by your phone that was not your choice but someone elses. someone else chose to ring you. Your choice to read this and someones choice to ring you collided. is this fate or two choices creating a new situation of different choices? you may look back on it and say it was fate that someone rang and i am in the situation i am in. peoples choices colliding create a situation but the outcome of a situation is by the choices you make.
if you think differently let me know.
