Freedom of Speech and Censorship

Online on websites such as this one do you think we should be allowed to swear, and if so how much?
Or is it okay to swear when you not using it against a specfic person or group of people?
When is it okay to censor peoples thoughts?
You can't change how they feel?
How does it make you feel? Spit it all out

I think most censorship is kind of silly. Inciting violence or panic is an easy exception. Disturbing the peace is also pretty reasonable.

Curses are interesting. Making them taboo makes them more effective. Certain forms of speech, regardless of society call them curse words and being shocked when children get to the age of saying it, will always be frowned upon in different settings. Sitting in a business meeting and calling your boss "Dude" will be as acceptable as wearing your pajama bottoms and wifebeater to work. Different times call for different ways of speech.

As for website censorship: I think it's silly to censor people for most curses (unless perhaps in a hateful fashion, but even then I typically couldn't care less if someone uses them against me)--but it's not my place to say that. We're not in a public park or bar and having our rights violated. Someone owns this site and lets us be on it. If s/he wants to censor us for saying "pencils" then what can we do? We're not forced to be here, it's not essential for us to be here, and there are billions of other sites to be on if we find the rules RIDICULOUSLY harsh. If you're in someone else's home or restaurant or club, and they tell you "No smoking, no sleeveless shirts, no making out, no yelling, etc" you can't be pissed about infringing on rights.

  • Censorship is wrong
Personally I think as long as it isn't excessive, like you don't say it about or to anyone or a group of people its fine. Now I know things get censored on this site because I have been I want the mods to know this is in NO WAY an attack on them or insult to them or anyone. I was recently censored and I want to know how everyone else feels about sites being censored, its just me being curious on other peoples thoughts on the subject.

I think of all sites this one should be censored the least unless its petty back and forth drama due to the nature of this website.

Some see censorship while others see basic rules. It's a fact that you will see what you want to see. Now, I cannot speak for other people, establishments, or websites but I can speak in reference to allphilosophy. This site is easily accessible by any individual within any age group from any country which offers internet access. Furthermore, within these many age groups we also must consider the different maturity levels of these people visiting us from different points all over our globe. That being the case it would be very ill advised not to have some basic rules as to keep everyone one on the most level playing field as possible.

Like it or not, this site is very much like a small virtual society. Without a few basic guidelines you would have chaos instead of an organized site. You are sort of burning a candle at both ends. You want to offer your members and visitors as much freedom as possible to express themselves but at the same time you must establish certain rules and guidelines to keep any one member from running over another member or members verbally.

I'm in no way considering myself to be so bold as to think I can speak for everyone, but I know for a fact verbal abuse can be just as bad as physical abuse. A real living and breathing society must have some form of structure to thrive and a virtual one is no different.

Now what offends one person might seem silly to another but be it as it may the final call must be made as to where the line must be drawn. I know some look and see censorship and that is fine for I cannot help what they see. But, I look I see basic guidelines. One man's censorship is another man's freedom. Is the glass half empty or half full. You will see what you want to see in the end regardless.
