Eternal Recurrence

"What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' ... Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine." - Nietzsche (The Gay Science)

From this Nietzsche quote, where would you stand, would you see the demon as a demon who speaks lies or see this demon as a god who speaks true to your heart.

Demon or God?
  • This demon is a God
I would embrace such words no matter who or what states them. Divine words indeed!

  • Nah
I like solitude quite a bit. More than most of my friends. But I love partying, and more than that I love spending time with the people I care about. I would not want to live a life of loneliness over and over.

  • You've missed the point
Neitzsche is pointing to many things in this quote, but prominently the flailing nature of passion and the human mind, pertaining to the entirety of human existence. He wishes to express to the reader the way in which our mind comprehends value, and how quickly this can be lost; in the sense of value created by passion.
