What are the personal prerogatives of emotions? What events/factors (internal or external) influence our emotions, and are we capable of disregarding/consciously overriding our emotions?

chemical reactions
it is proven that emotion are merely chemical reactions in the brain that make us feel a certain way.

relative
You can't say what influences emotion because it is relative . but to say what emotion is simply a state of mind ,which is to say it's how we think of something an idea and a describer and yes i think emotion can be over ridden especially with another but you can achieve a state of indifference

Why we feel
I feel that emotions are nothing more than instinctual reactions to events that occur in our daily lives. They are influenced by an array of events and factors. i.e...waking up late in the morning, an altercation with a loved one/close friend, being cut-off on the freeway, death of a loved one/close friend, etc. There is some type of event or factor that we all encounter in our daily lives. That event leads us to react in a way to help us understand and cope with that event. We do so with emotions. i.e...we lose a loved one-we feel depressed and grieve for our loss due to our attachment, we win the lotterly-we feel joyful and happy due to a possible incerease in financial stability (materialism at its best), we get cut off on the freeway-we are angered by the circumstance and lack of consideration and compassion that the offender possesses, a severe thunderstorm blows down a tree that collapses on your vehicle-frustration and anger towards events that were clearly out of your control. Why do we feel that reacting to events (whether in our control or not) with emotional responses somehow derives a solution to the underlying problem? Are our emotions solutions to problems or simply unconscious/instinctual justifications for our inablity to control them? Do humans have the ability to not experience emotions? Do you believe that we can consciously or subconsciously "turn off" our instinctual reactions to everyday problems beyond our control? Your thoughts...
