What is our likeness to God?

  • In Judaism

Something non-physical according to the Jewish understanding. The phrase in Hebrew is b’tzelem Elohim, and tzelem is understood as refering to the non-physical. Different people have said it means different things. Some say it refers to the pure intellect. Others say the soul is a part of God. Answers vary. I don’t bother with a specific answer and rather say simply that there is something about us that resembles God in a non-physical way.

  • What Is God Like?

We can’t compare ourselves to God without knowing what God is like; and we don’t.

  • Gods' likeness

Considering the stories of the bible, I would suggest that the nature of a story is triune. The nature of a myth is a trinity.

The three aspects of this trinity are; i) the one who wrote (or is writing) the story ii) the one who is living in (or “ living out”) the story iii) the one who is reading the story

The biblical story of creation is triune also, with these aspects; i) the creator (God) ii) His creation (universe) iii) His creature (mankind)

These aspects may be considered as; i) reality (God) ii) objective reality (universe) iii) subjective reality (mankind)

These triune world views also represent the media of myth / story / communication / language / prayer.

As we consider we are in the likeness of the triune God, we may consider the Holy Trinity represented in the phrase “I and Thou”, The three aspects of which are; i) “Thou”...(God) the Father / other / (mother) ii) “and”...the Holy Spirit / relationship iii) “I”...the Son (of God) / self

To reiterate, The One who wrote and is writing the story of life (and our lives is God the creator, reality, the (original) Other, the immediate (and ultimate) Thou.

The One living in and living out the story is the Holy Spirit, objective reality, the relationships we enter.

The One reading the story is the Son of God, subjective reality, (mankind, the creature), the ideal “I”, Self

  • Image of God

According to the Bible we are created in the image of God; I would take that to mean that when mankind was first created we had eternal life, and also a triune structure (body, soul, and spirit) to match His trinity. When we sinned, we lost some of that, like, obviously, eternal life, but probably some of our intelligence and resistance to disease as well, and who knows what else! But through Jesus we can become like God again; that is why Jesus is the firstborn among many brothers, and why we are supposed to conform to Him. The resemblance is still here, today, though not as strongly as it once was, and in those who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit it is growing greater.

We are one of the many physical form/ shape variations of the energy that is God. In the same way that Windows Media Player creates a visualization of the audio you hear. God creates a physical form from the energy that it is. This physical form is the universe of which we are. This is how we are in the likeness of God.

  • Humean

According to David Hume, in his dialogues concerning natural religion, God must resemble us in that he must have human atributes (as in Human traits) otherwise we would not be able to comprehend the nature of God and so would not be able to state that God was perfect, that God was good etc.

Hume himself was of course an athiest… but his Dialogues concerning natural religion were argued from the point of view of theists.

  • He Makes Things, We Make Things

If you didn’t know, the universe one day will consist of nothing but manmade objects- all the raw materials gone. Then you could say man had achieved God status, even though all he did was create a bunch of baubles.

We are created in the image and likness of God. Now before you Get all weird. I am not judging anyone. You believe what you believe. I can’t change your mind unless you want to. Yes God is a mystery. But if ghosts can talk to you or spirits not that i believe in that. Why couldn’t God talk to the Pope. Catholics have this thing called ex cathedra. It is latin meaning From the Chair. It means that when the Pope is speaking about faith or morals from the chair he is not wrong. I know this is sort of off the topic sorry.

Almighty God has created man after His own image. All the charity, kindness, gracefulness, love, sympathies, sacrifice, truth, beauty, nobility, generosity, commandment, leadership, even anger on finding something going wrong, pardon and others are actually the qualities of Almighty God, which He has bestowed upon human beings.

Ok. People say God created us in his image. I like thinking that humans created God in their image. That makes more sense. No one has "seen" or been in complete direct contact with God (as far as I know) so how can we know that God made us in our image? I think it's the contrary. Plus, I'm ready to bet my house and family that we really don't relate to him at all... that is if he exists. We're such bad... people. We all sin. Do you honestly think God is a thief, a liar, a hypocrite and a polluter like all of us (or most rather)? That's... not fair for him. We like thinking he's like us. It whitens us of our sinful habits. But that's just my opinion. Goodbye house and family if I die and find out God is a lard ass on his couch, eating twinkies and watching planet earth TV and laughing at us. Hmmm.

  • In the Image of Us...

Well well, God created us in his image… or we created him in our image. I think we created God to be like we wanted the perfect judge and human to be (depending on which testamente you speak of). We wanted a role model and an all round morale to follow. A set of rules to live by. So our likeness to God is that he is the personalization of our morale code and our forefathers’ dreams for their society…
