Little do people know...

This is the United States Military Flag:

This is the United States Civil Flag:

Written in the introduction of The Scarlet Letter
by Nathaniel Hawthorne:
"the banner of the republic; but with the thirteen stripes turned vertically, instead of horizontally, and thus indicating that a civil, and not a military, post of Uncle Sam's government is here established."

Well I guess this explains a lot...

  • really?
Honestly, I've never seen the one with the vertical stripes before.

  • Well
That's a little out of context. CIVILIANS don't exactly use the flag, as in the average joe would be having this outside. It would be for government places run by civilians and not military authority--like customs at the time. As in, you're going to another country and get checked at CUSTOMS. Their symbol is similar today, with the bald eagle from the Great Seal of the US replacing the stars.

I did hear something about certain trading posts and merchant houses picking up the flag for a short period of time, as if it were going to become a symbol of peaceful trade, but then it kind of dried up. I've also heard a couple arguments for this flag being the "real" flag, but nothing with much substance.
