New abortion study. . .An assistant professor at Bowling Green State University says even in the event of an unintended teen pregnancy, giving birth is better for teenagers than abortion. A study conducted by BGSU research psychologist Dr. Priscilla Coleman determined that abortion can cause severe mental health problems in young women.Voted for by Carpool.
Coleman says she took data from a longitudinal survey of more than 1,000 women to find out the difference between teens who gave birth and teens who aborted an unexpected pregnancy. Her study, published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, evaluated adolescent girls with unintended pregnancies and found that those who aborted their babies were five times more likely to seek help for psychological and emotional problems afterward than those girls who carried their pregnancies to term.
A teenage mother's bringing of a child into the world is undoubtedly an experience that will afford her some hardships, the researcher acknowledges. "But there are more psychological problems with abortions, even more than with delivering a baby," she asserts.
The research "speaks pretty loudly," Coleman observes. "Specifically, we found that only one adolescent who delivered an unintended pregnancy, for every five adolescents who aborted, sought counseling for psychological problems," she says.
Also, extensive studies indicate that, as compared with every one adolescent with a birth experience, "just slightly under every four adolescents with an abortion reported frequent sleep disturbances," the Bowling Green State psychologist points out. "And then finally," she adds, "the study found that only one adolescent with a birth -- in excess of every six adolescents who aborted -- reported more frequent marijuana use."
The scientific evidence is now both "strong and compelling," Coleman contends, that abortion "poses more risks to women than giving birth." She says these findings really fly in the face of traditional pro-abortion thinking by supporting the idea that, although having a child as a teen creates definite difficulties, a teen is likely to encounter far more problems after an abortion.
In her report, Coleman states that, for "women who feel forced into abortion by others or by life circumstances, negative post-abortion outcomes become more common." She goes on to note that adolescent girls, being generally far less prepared to assume the responsibilities of parenthood, are logically more vulnerable to being pressured to abort.
Statistics from the Planned Parenthood-affiliated Alan Guttmacher Institute, which tracks U.S. abortion rates, would seem to bear this out. According to the Institute, every year nearly a quarter of all abortions in the U.S. are performed on girls less than 20 years old.
But despite the excellent data supporting her study, Coleman complains that no mainstream news outlets have reported her findings. In fact, she says it took a while to get the Journal of Youth and Adolescence to publish her results.

Don't end a lifeIf you can't control you're sex drive but are also not ready for a child, then put it up for adoption instead of ending the child's life before it really gets a chance to live. And if you're raped, do the same thing. I know you may not want to, but do you really want to be worse than a rapist and become a murderer?Voted for by Wolf of Roses.

The best way to abort a child! The best way to abort a child!Voted for by Ekenobi basil.
I'm happy that it is called a child and not merely a thing. A child is not a toy or any other thing that one should neglect. Ask about child's abuse and all those acts which are contrary or against the life, survival and existence of children.
As for me, the best way to abort a child is to give birth to the child. To close this chapter, let me ask you a question; assuming you were aborted, would you have been what you are today? If the presidents, and the people of the world, low and high were aborted, how do you think they would have become whatever they are or whatever they were as the case may be?

Abortion is kind of necessaryI personally don't like the idea of it. I mean, if I were a girl and pregnant, I don't think I could go through with it.Voted for by cosmosis.
BUT, sometimes abortions are necessary and that's why they need to stay legal. Some pregnancies can lead to serious complications for mothers. Before the modern age, 1 in 3 pregnant women died from some complication carrying the baby or giving birth.
So if you're stuck in a situation where the mother might die from the pregnancy, abortion seems like the only thing left to do if all else fails. I mean, if the mother dies, the baby will also die, so if the baby is going to die anyway, why not just save the life you can?
I am not anti-abortion but I understand where pro-lifers are coming from. The whole idea of it is a little unnerving but nonetheless, necessary to have legal. I think the problem most pro-lifers have is that people tend to abuse abortion: for example, people who just have sex willy nilly without using protection and when they get knocked up just abort the embryo/fetus and just move on unscathed.
But I'm sure even the most adamant pro-lifer will concede their staunch position against abortion if it meant that they themselves or a loved one was going to die from a pregnancy complication.
I know it's a rare situation, but nonetheless a plausible one that needs to be addressed. -
Well thats a slightly loaded question..."best way?"Voted for by Crazyhead.
Really?
well.... i would say the best way to abort a pregnancy would be to cross your legs before it gets that far...
if unable to do that... morning after pill, since that is not actually an abotion in any way, it simply stops the egg from implanting itself on the uterin wall...
should better judgement be absent and those two options are not taken... then 1: try to go back to school to pass 9th grade health class. and then 2: weigh any and all options before commiting to keeping it, giving it away, selling it to the circus, and/or aborting it...
however... once the baby is born, society generally frows upon abortion even more than usual.... and that is generally considered murder...
so make up your mind quickly....

Abstenance is NOT a solution. Proper education (And equipment) is.

Abstinence is certainly a solution. Perhaps not one that you're fond of, but it is a solution nonetheless, nano.

Most of the teens would still be having sex, but now they would be significantly less educated about it. It's better to provide a /solution/ to a problem, and not just pretend like sex doesn't and shouldn't happen.
What people need is knowledge - they need to know what what they are doing WILL end in pregnancy or infection IF thy do not take measures to prevent either. They need to know the benefits and drawbacks of each birth control option. They need to be told what myths are false and which are true (... most are false, heh.)
Abstenence is THE best solution, but because of our society and how the young view sex, it shouldn't be the only solution presented.

Also, perhaps another thing that might be wise to do is, if the society's youth view sex in such a manner, then try to change the society. Obviously, this is far easier said than done, but kids respond most accutely to what society says. So if the society recomends abstinence, the kids will gradually shift to that paradigm. I'm not on some religious crusade to tell kids sex is evil. It's not. But you yourself said that abstinence is the best and safest solution, and ultimately the wisest choice. While absolutely, protection needs to be taught, it ought to be strongly emphasized that abstinence is a much better choice all around, and at the same time, work to change the society's view on abstinence which would by extension gradually change the way youth look at it as well, perhaps in a more welcoming and understanding light. However, teenagers will always be, well, teenagers. I'm not saying you could completely eliminate it from the society. Just my two cents for 'ya.

And, thanks Weydon for clearing up the importance of education.
Not everyone is an idiot about sex, and I have an inlking that maybe the education given by public schools and doctors MIGHT have something to do with it.

My school wasnt so great on the educating. Health class turned into more of a joke than anything that was useful and Im sure alot of other schools are like that. That I feel is something we need to fix but whether we have all this great education or not...teenage mentality is that it will never happen to them. So most are going to ignore it and 'have' get abortions anyway.

The only ACTUAL teenage mentality that needs to be considered about sex ed is the fact that--like always--many of them will be having sex regardless of what's being taught. I'm happy that TV and school taught me right from wrong about protection. Otherwise I may have been using the girl-on-top-then-pull-out-then-have-her-pee method, completely certain I'd be okay.

Wait, this doesn't work?
And, I agree with what you were saying in your first paragraph; a good number of teens aren't as braindead as people assume them to be. Well some will always need to learn the hard way, most will listen to what their more experienced (insert some sort of guardian or role model here) will tell them.
I mean, look at teen pregnancies compared to teens activly having sex. The difference is quite large, especially when considered that teens (and 20's) probably have more sex with more people than any other age.

Kids know it but they dont use it. Its not like that commercial where she stands up and says no. At least not around here. If you dont give it up if you are in a relationship your not gonna have one anymore and there are some people who just wont comply to the birth control business.
