I've always enjoyed reading. Fantasy, sci-fi, realistic, historical... But why is it that, when I check out a fantasy or sci-fi book from the library, I earn stares? Why is it that the definition of good literature seems to include "takes place on Earth"?

people believes that fantasy (im using this cause i read this genre) does not give a person examples of real life situations and therefore, is not a book of quality, merely of quantity.
this thought is horribly wrong (which i told some old bag in chapters the other day). just because a book uses situations that we may never "exactly" be in, it does not mean that the emotions, choices, lessons or the outcomes are any different than what we would experience in this world.
fantasy is about parellels, and that is what i love about it. you are shown a world that is not your own and you see people act in the same way they would in this world.
besides, if a person can create a world sepporate from this one, are they not pouring more into it then a normal fiction writer?

Irresponsible
Perhaps they think our minds should remain on Earth. They see those who read fantasy and sci-fi as escaping from Earth, neglecting their duties, etc. And they think that is an irresponsible thing to do. Just a guess, though.

I read my brothers Eragon and Eldest books, which I enjoyed until the film made it into farcical nonsense.
