it definetly separate people . at the beginning religon should not be exist for one logical reason second it is not fair to belive in some thing that never sacrifays to make u belive in with some thing . Religon is never speaks about union it always tell about pass and fail , being or not being my opinion is religon is designed to separate people in such a way that they should never have to be togeather . for exsample see the people around the world like israel and palestine with what do u thing they are fighting for think of the world wars it’s all aboout belif e and as my conclusion religon should not be exist for any thing .

well, if you ask me, then religions do separate people, and they bring hate indeed
Look at what happened on september the 11th, Bin Laden attacked basically because that were all people with another believe… so there you have a war

My personal example: I’m gay, and ooooh, I am such a big sinner if it comes to religions, while the religions always say ‘love your fellow man’
I’m an atheist myself, so I don’t care… but if you ask me: religions aren’t needed

I really truly believe that it brings people with the same views together, but people of different ones apart. I mean I know that as a christian I love to hear other peoples views but hate to be told that mine are wrong.

Religion seperates/faith binds14% Voted for by jfritzyb, frndofyaweh.
Religions cause turmoil throughout history. Simple belief and values do not. Faith in God alone causes no seperation, except on the part of those who feel threatened by it.

religion does tend to bring people together of the same faith and beliefes, but as for people of diffrent religions it pushes them appart.

Religion only starts wars and makes people hate other relious people, if they take it to an extreme. If you only believe what is suppose to be believed then you do not hate people of other religions.
Good example of people who take it too far, is Osama. You said that because of religion he did that. We did not want to fight him. It was his extreme way of looking at things that had him do that.
Religion gives a good set of beliefs and set of mind, that everyone should have. Just don’t take it to an extreme. Keep and open mind when looking at things of religion. Don’t block someone else out just because they don’t believe the same thing you do.

Even Jesus hated religion. It is the ritualistic culmination of religion, that causes strife among diversity.

Does religion or God bring people together? God....Voted for by jfritzyb.
Firstly, True Christianity is not a religion—it’s a relationship with Jesus Christ. Simply because part of one of God’s commands was to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. This is a relationship—not a religion. Because…If we love God with all our heart, soul and mind, we automatically follow all the rules because God gives us His love and because of this love, we follow all the rules—not because we have to, but because we want to. Albeit, before you reach your pinnacle of perfection, you will have to make yourself read your Bible, meditate on its passages, and pray. Firstly though, one must reveal the heart to God and confess all things to Him. Then, we “want to” read the Bible and do all of the above—including following the rules. If we still don’t, why, we have yet to read our Bibles, meditate on scripture, and pray. What fullness there is with following God!

right...
you are right in everything you say but without religon people wouldn't feel as safe or be as comfortable with death, it helps to bring individuals peace but does cause wars among religons. ~Ash~April 6, 2005

good choice of words
you are exactly right. and so is ohsweetie. religions divide people and cause war. religions also make people feel comfortable with death. but your belief is also a religion. by trying to keep religion out of public you are trying to publically make everyone and atheist. so again we have another war over religion. however... if every belief will cause conflict with another... shouldn't it seem that only one of them can be correct. thanks for posting. -michealApril 24, 2005

Anyone read the essay in the current Utne Reader about this?
There's an interesting essay about this in the current issue of Utne Reader. Has anyone else read it? When I read it I didn't know that I would be trying to summarize it for others, but it basically says that when 'liberals' like myself try to be tolerant of EVERYONE's religious beliefs, we're really messing things up because we're making it possible for fundamentalists to cling to their irrational, sometimes dangerous beliefs that cause them to hate each other and stop humanity from working together.
