Christians-Do you practice what you preach?

Christian religions generally send a very good message. But how many Christians actually practice what they preach? Would you invite a homeless person to your home to feed and clothe him/her? Would you denounce God if you had a gun pointed at your head? Would you sell all of your possessions and give to the poor?
  • Not many do
Many people in my family claim to be very devout Christians. But they rarely follow what they supposedly believe. It makes me very angry because I am a Christian, and although I do not go to church as often as they do, I know where I stand morally. If they don't practice what they preach, why do they even put on the act? I understand that everyone is human and has faults, but I also know that many people try much harder than others to be good people.

  • Some
I know many people who merely say they are Christians out of apathy. Christianity is the 'national religion' so they just go along with it. However I do also know very well, some Christians who long to practice what is written in the Bible and who undertake actions based upon what Christ would have done.

  • Not just Christianity
I'm pretty sure no matter what religion it is, whether Christianity or not, all have their hypocrites. I'm a christian and I consider myself devout, yet it's not as easy as I thought it would be, I have my faults, yet I attempt to overcome. Otherwise, you can't blame just christians, I personally know a buddhist, and he's not very good at putting into effect what he believes.

  • No, we are hypocrites.
I'm a Christian, but I know that for what I am about to say I will probably be skewered.

Virtually EVERY. SINGLE. CHRISTIAN. ON. THE. PLANET. fails, and fails MISERABLY, to practice what they preach. We are some of the most hypocritical people on the whole planet. We have instilled fear where there was to be hope, hate where there was to be love, sorrow where there was to be joy. We denouce the unmarried pregnant teenager and yet will ignore the three other people within the church who did the same thing. We screech from our pulpits fire and brimstone, decrying individuals and organizations as evil, and yet participate in the same activities. No one but US, precious, god-chartered US, is remotely close to righteousness, we think. We love to play the victim, we love to oh-boo-hoo about how this society is crumbling around us even though we're right there in the thick of it.

And I, I am the worst among them! I wear a coat of arrogance, adorned with a cloak of ignorance and I wield a sword of self-righteousness. I, God forgive me, am a hypocrite, as is virtually every single other Christian living today.

We have failed, in almost every way, to be the people we preach of. We turned Jesus's message into a religized, corrupt, power-hungry, and, in the not so distant past, bloodthirsty, all in the name of God.

We are nothing like Jesus, no, not one single, tiny, miniscule bit.

Please understand I'm not trying to say I hate Christians. I certainly don't. But for thousands of years, Christians have failed, miserably, to be the loving, caring, kind, merciful, people of service Jesus calls us to be, and we are going to kill ourselves. One day, of its own hyposcrisy, the mighty Christian church will commit suicide, and it will say in the history books, "And thus the Christian church fell."

Okay, my little rant is over.

  • i try to
i admit I don't always, but i try to practice what i preach. i'm nowhere near perfect, in fact, I can be a downright S.O.B., but I want to do the right thing, when i know what that is.

as for giving to the poor, i say use judgement. not all poor folks are victims of circumstance. some bring it on themselves, and will take you down with them if you let them. you must use discernment. the bible warns against casting pearls before swine. it's wonderful to help people, but don't become prey to leeches. it's an easy trap to fall into. I fell into it a few times.

still, there's nothing wrong with honesty. I found a purse the other day, and i tracked down the owner and gave it back to her. I did that because that's what i would want someone to do for me if i lost my wallet.

do unto others, as you would have done unto you

  • Why..
I wonder what is the purpose of this question.. If the answer would be that 99% don't practice what they preach - could you conclude anything about God or Christianity from here?
Or is it for a big picture of what an average Christian today is like?
If you hear a fact from somebody whose actions are inconsistent with it - you tend to ignore the fact. You have a "good" excuse for doing so - the man who's telling me about it doesn't do it himself! Well, the word is there for YOU. You need to start thinking about yourself and not the person who said it. Because those who preach often do not realize the power behind the Word. Don't look at the Christians as somebody you need to be like. No - the ideal is Jesus Christ, and many, majority, fails to portray his image in things they do and words they say.

So if the question was about how many Christians actually do what they preach, my best answer would be - a few. But you need to know that what Christians do - does not define God.
