A British school marm in the Sudan allowed a teddy bear to be named 'Muhammed' for a student named 'Muhammed' and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and deportation. Angry Muslim mobs protesting in the streets demanded a death sentence...

The whole thing is ridiculous
Every time I have seen this case appear on the news in the last week or so, I have just been in total disbelief as to how a teddy bear has managed to start an international crisis...I'm sure that any sensible, moderate Muslim would object just as strongly to this innocent woman being imprisoned for such a ridiculous 'crime'.
These kind of cases really should not ever even come to the courts, it gives Islam a very bad image, which is the last thing the religion needs at the moment, with so many people lumping Islamic extremists in with the rest of them.
I would be interested to hear what any Muslims on allphilosophy think about the matter.

Death is too harsh a penalty for giving a bad name to a teddy bear
The Sudan probably doesn't even have many bears, and giving a teddy bear probably teaches wrong ecological conservation values making them 'bear huggers'. Traditional Muslim caining for naming anything Muhammed- a blaspheming, might have been less bad.
Fortunately the teacher may get out of Sudan alive perhaps to value the life experience of seriously underestimating the nature of Muhammadism. Luckily she didn't give the kids anything like Sherrie Lewis' 'Lambchops' and said it was 'is-lamb', the Lamb of God or anything like that...Muhammedans can get livid with rage about misunderstanding what is-lamb means as the perfect example of submission to the will of God.

bad
It's sad to see a nation of people acting so barbaric.
You'd think this teacher would have been wiser than that, but children are good at pressuring adults.

an inconvenient thought
The Quran says it they believe it that settles it!
I'm confused I thought Fundamentalism was a good thing? unthinking obedience to ones religion should be encouraged! moral relativism is a disease gentlemen and ladies. I would like to remind you that a little Levin levinith the whole lump. For if we point a bony finger at the excesses of Islam whats to stop them from doing the same to us. that means we wont be able to take the high ground by; stopping the distribution of condoms in Africa to get a handle on AIDS, Turning a blind eye to the suffering of millions around the world while we contemplate levitical law. no i say let the fool woman be exiled or killed or whatever. Its an internal Islamic problem. anyways for every school teacher they kill they chop off the head of a homosexual and that is a good thing...right? no let sleeping dogs lie we are much better off!

if she had named a teddy bear Jesus
no Christian would care that much. the most anybody would have said would have been "That's not appropriate".
no death threats, no jail time, no deportation.
We didn't lynch Robert Mapplethorpe when he dunked a crucifix in a bucket of piss and called it art.
We dont kill authors like Phillip Pullman when they write stories that lambaste Christianity.
we can take criticism. Muslims cannot. they are too childish. they are like schoolyard bullies who get upset when someone points out their wrongdoing, but are only too happy to hurt others over any reason they find.
