Is friendship ultimately self-serving? What do you think?

Is the human race really getting so bad as to where anything that isnt accepted as 'the norm' is attacked in some form or fashion? People who use wheelchairs are just that.. People. Human nature is to be social and have friends so what makes them so different? I know that I would still carry the same friendship if my best friend was suddenly confined to a wheelchair, and I also know that if I met a stranger on the street in a wheelchair I'd look at him the exact same as I looked at the man walking by next to him. Is there nobody else like that left?

They can be jerksVoted for by Danteku.
Heh... no I understand though. Some people would hang out with the wheelchair kid cuz they feel bad, then use 'em, getting rides and sympathy, and even the really vile people use this poor soul to a terrible means, taking advantage of them in their state. Some people think that the wheelchair kid is a pushover, and MUST be lonely, so they make a false friendship and then take advantage of them, using them for some deviant purpose, and then boom they're done. ...jerks

.... I guess I never really thought of it. But then again, why would I question other people's friendships? Other people's motives? Let's not judge 'till we know them personally, ok?

I have no friends because...Voted for by frndofyaweh.
...we are all family and they are more than just friends to me. What about, the child in a wheelchair? I would teach him about God and then teach him how God can heal him and wheel chair will no longer matter, whether it is still present or no longer needed. Healing is not always a physical matter.

those with low self esteem might feel intimidated by everyone except the invalid (wheelchair guy) who doesn't threaten them.

Better Think TwiceVoted for by Energizer Bunny.
I hang around not just one but many people in wheel chairs and walkers and I can say with confidence that I am NOT doing it for self-serving reasons. In my spare time I work with many people with disabilities. Yes, I'm aware that many people do take advantage of them, but there are still many of us out there who seek to help them WITHOUT personal gain being the underlying motive!!

What else could it be?Voted for by justonewish.
Well, you have friends so that you feel accepted or.. just what ever your reason for having friends – any way, you have friends so that you can make yourself feel right and proper. And if you are one who makes friends with others just so that you can help them, not in it to benefit yourself.. you still do that to make yourself feel like you are helping, thus making you feel better. So yes, friendship is ultimately self-serving.
