If you believe in something so strongly, should you be able to place it higher than the law?

Well I thought Id get down with some proper philosophy to get people thinking, instead of the same topics where people just argue. Anyway If you believe in something so strongly, is it right to disobey the law for what you truly believe is right? With the terrorist attacks over the recent years and everything else, I thought this a good question to ask.
  • yes
But you must believe in it strongly enough to take the consequinces as well, martyrdom if nessisary. If its not worth dying for , its not worth fighting for

  • Im not entirely sure, I think it depends
I'm not very decided on my question, but I think depends on what laws you are breaking, and what it is you so strongly believe in. I think, in the end it all comes down to moral, and what is right or wrong, and a lot of people differentiate in that matter, since some people think different things are right or wrong. Overall I think that the laws are put there for a reason, that reason is to serve and protect the people, but if the law isn't doing its job, then parts of it should be changed. I think I'm just confusing myself now, oh well (waves at everyone, "hello!")

  • No?
Of course not. I mean, technically it depends on the laws. Helping runaway slaves prior to the Civil War, for an easy example. But a defense that "Your honor, I clearly believe otherwise" simply can't be an acceptable defense. We can, and do disobey laws we don't think are all that great, but we do so understanding the risk. If we want it to be changed, we need to campaign for it and not just expect some sort of "I believe differently" ruling. It would cause chaos.

  • Well...
Law is relative to belief because belief cannot be governed by law but is often influenced by it in society. The point of veiw gathered by one person could be the complete opposite of another. I was actually watching this documentry about a 40 or 30 year old guy who captured atleast 3, I think it was 5, young woman and used them as sex slaves. When he was caught he claimed he had no idea there would be such dire consiquences to his actions, he thought he would have to pay a simple fine. After going to jail it took them a few months to convince him that what he did was against the law. He obviously went against the law and held his own beliefs above the law, but considering this was his form of a common state of mind, if he were to be in control of the law he could easily change the state of mind of others over time. I believe that people make their own laws and are influenced by the majority ideals of what the law should be.
