"There are no moral laws. In the mass media, it is considered courageous and cool to flaunt decorum and be disgusting. These days, no bodily function escapes scrutiny and sex is an obsession. Attempts to raise humanity above the level of fruit fly are considered old fashioned and prudish." -Henry Makow, Ph.D.

Nature of importanceI must say Im pretty much in agreement with you in the respect that very important issues, at least to me are indeed overlooked, however being on a philosophy site you will find many degrees of what is Important and why, from a purely philosophical point of view, in my own humble opinnion, nothing in this life has any more importance than the individual is willing to assign it Concidering the finite nature of mankind in general. One country will rise, another will fall, children will be born while others grow old and pass away, in the end none really mattered , unless by some means, man finds a way to achieve Imortality on his own , given the resulting population explosion im glad I wont be present to suffer it. All things pass , it comes to nothing60% Voted for by Dwn, bob2314, pnktrky.
This being said, I and many of the people you will meet here will continue to seek like minded, or even unlike minded , thinking individuals , in an attempt to try to find equitable solutions to problems that will make the life we do have a little better for everyone, thats why we come here , Rather than talking in Britneys chat room -
AgreedI agree with you completelyVoted for by Kirst.
However I don't believe it is merely ignorance that is the cause..
Yes ignorance has a lot to do with why people are unable to have a conversation about certain matters, but I think it has a lot to do with fear as well.
people are afraid to accept the truth and are afraid to accept reality. Climate change, wars, corruption, political leaders, these are all subjects people and society are afraid to face. Instead of discussing and dealing with these matters straight on, humans would rather discuss things that are much easier to swallow, such as sex, make-up and material things.
Media uses sex to sell because it is probably the most clever way to sell things, it recognizes how humans think and encourages it. The sad things is humans go with it none the wiser. That is where ignorance comes in. The inability to separate ones own beliefs and morals with the media's brainwashing bulls**t -
It's not our faultI disagree with you. The problem should not that people are ignorant, which they are, every single of them including me and you, but rather, that we are not able to know anything about everything. Because of that small flaw, we do not believe in ourselves to actually go after any other topics but the ones we are "interested" in.Voted for by RT michaels.
It's basically the bystander effect. There are people to run governments for us, why should i think? And the people in around the world will eventually stop starving, right?
None of us care to learn because none of it applies to us directly. American Idol and Brittney's chatroom are both so popular because we feel a sense of control over those two things, a sense of importance. An imaginary sort of importance, yes, but one nonetheless.
Also, i would not say that we go on with media's tactics "none the wiser". I know about it, you know about it, and everyone else in the world knows about it. But we are happy to go along with it because we are bored.
To get right down to it, the only way to truly "solve" ignorance, which you can't, is by giving humans all the information on a topic, give humans a reason to care, and give them something to do with it. Otherwise they are going to be mindlessly drawn to sex, Brittany, and American Idol. Occasionally they may drop a dollar in a bucket to Kick HIV out of Kenya, whatever that means.

Can you see it?
Well I tell you dear Dr., people are people... or something like that. There are so many infinate combinations of answers and questions in this world... so what are the right ones... and what are trivial. i guess it just come down to common sense. YES there are issues in this existance, in this world, in this moment, that are far more important to discuss, bt it all comes down to who is in the discusson. I think the majority of people that we are dealing with ...like a fair 80% of the sample population here ..just don't care enough to care. And what i mean by that is if it is not entertainment or if it involves work or too much investment on their part the topic is a dud to them and bears no importance. Its pretty simple... those of us in this society, the philosophers, and i use that term loosely, the thinkers, face a true challenge against the hordes of sheep that look to follow the societal flow. We are the ones who need to stick our necks out, put our hands up, speak out and be heard. NOT just sit in our quiet huddles whimpering about the worlds problems. We can be the catylist. Of course change is enivitanble eithr way... but we must claim that rudder in the name of humanity, kindness, love, passion, and logic. ACK what a blind rant i hope it made sense. But truly, don't feel alone or hopless about the fate of the masses. The survival of those who can adapt and overcome, with knowledge and intelligence,is far more likely than that of the common consumer in this world. Keep up the faith and keep talking.pnktrky

However, poverty striken and undereducated people are far easier to control than a wealthy educated poulation.
The liberal corporate machine (seems to be a new term doesn't it, but beleive me when I tell you, it does exist) would have you believe that without investing the multi billions of research dollars to solve a non existant problem, we are all domed, is highly dependent om misseducation and poverty to reap its monatary rewards, as well as its power base. And, one of the critical areas of their agenda is to sell global warming. The same principles that apply to the corporate right , just from a different angle, and until we break the strangle hold of wage slavery, we will never truely be able to efectively combat eather environmental or economic problems

I totally agree. There is always something deeper, something more than the even flow of everyday thinking. But I am sure you will find many people do do it.... They may just not consider themselves philosophers, and it may not be quite as important or frequent for them. But you never know. The mind is a mystery, living in a island of its own. Two minds can touch, but only briefly. The rest is between yourself, and God - and yourself, and yourself. Please register or login to comment! It's totally free
