Ignorance everywhere!

Why don't people care about anything important?? I have a hard time trying to have somewhat of a constructive conversation with people. Nobody knows how our government works or how our economy is run or about the (criminal) monetary policy, and you know what? They don't give two shits either! Few will vote for the President but everybody will vote for American Idol. If I don't talk about bodily functions or television or food, I am treated as if I am some sort of effing weirdo. And just to clarify, this isn't just about politics, it's anything of any topic of any sort of relevance to the real world. I do not want to hear how many people you slept with, or how much beer you drink, or who won that reality tv show, or what britney spears is doing. But God forbid I try to talk to you about anything of relevance to anything. I tried to speak to one person about climate change, and that person said to me "I can't even talk about that for very long, it's too much" That person is in city council and is currently running for State Rep.! Am I insane?

"There are no moral laws. In the mass media, it is considered courageous and cool to flaunt decorum and be disgusting. These days, no bodily function escapes scrutiny and sex is an obsession. Attempts to raise humanity above the level of fruit fly are considered old fashioned and prudish." -Henry Makow, Ph.D.
  • Nature of importance
I must say Im pretty much in agreement with you in the respect that very important issues, at least to me are indeed overlooked, however being on a philosophy site you will find many degrees of what is Important and why, from a purely philosophical point of view, in my own humble opinnion, nothing in this life has any more importance than the individual is willing to assign it Concidering the finite nature of mankind in general. One country will rise, another will fall, children will be born while others grow old and pass away, in the end none really mattered , unless by some means, man finds a way to achieve Imortality on his own , given the resulting population explosion im glad I wont be present to suffer it. All things pass , it comes to nothing

This being said, I and many of the people you will meet here will continue to seek like minded, or even unlike minded , thinking individuals , in an attempt to try to find equitable solutions to problems that will make the life we do have a little better for everyone, thats why we come here , Rather than talking in Britneys chat room

  • Agreed
    I agree with you completely
However I don't believe it is merely ignorance that is the cause..
Yes ignorance has a lot to do with why people are unable to have a conversation about certain matters, but I think it has a lot to do with fear as well.

people are afraid to accept the truth and are afraid to accept reality. Climate change, wars, corruption, political leaders, these are all subjects people and society are afraid to face. Instead of discussing and dealing with these matters straight on, humans would rather discuss things that are much easier to swallow, such as sex, make-up and material things.

Media uses sex to sell because it is probably the most clever way to sell things, it recognizes how humans think and encourages it. The sad things is humans go with it none the wiser. That is where ignorance comes in. The inability to separate ones own beliefs and morals with the media's brainwashing bulls**t

  • It's not our fault
I disagree with you. The problem should not that people are ignorant, which they are, every single of them including me and you, but rather, that we are not able to know anything about everything. Because of that small flaw, we do not believe in ourselves to actually go after any other topics but the ones we are "interested" in.

It's basically the bystander effect. There are people to run governments for us, why should i think? And the people in around the world will eventually stop starving, right?

None of us care to learn because none of it applies to us directly. American Idol and Brittney's chatroom are both so popular because we feel a sense of control over those two things, a sense of importance. An imaginary sort of importance, yes, but one nonetheless.

Also, i would not say that we go on with media's tactics "none the wiser". I know about it, you know about it, and everyone else in the world knows about it. But we are happy to go along with it because we are bored.

To get right down to it, the only way to truly "solve" ignorance, which you can't, is by giving humans all the information on a topic, give humans a reason to care, and give them something to do with it. Otherwise they are going to be mindlessly drawn to sex, Brittany, and American Idol. Occasionally they may drop a dollar in a bucket to Kick HIV out of Kenya, whatever that means.
