I think this is a more problematic issue than most people see it to be. Our concept of freedom and by extension the self is seriously threatened by determinism (the notion that every event is caused by preceding events), and I have yet to hear a counter-argument which either successfully refutes it or shows it to be compatible with a notion of free will.

Well let’s see. You’ve initiated cause to effect by your post. I read and my mind is effected as a result of reading your statement, and I have a choice to respond or not. Pretty simple notion.

We may have Free Will.......22% Voted for by Mujtaba H Zaidi, Shamaila Khalid.
Sometimes, we feel highly free and independent. Almighty God has gifted man with both head and heart. So many times, it so happens that man can take bold steps in respect of his fortune and future. And many times, he looks imprisoned into the thick walls of fate….....Yet, man is a bit free to save himself from indulging in vile and vice!!!!

One last note before leaving....Voted for by jfritzyb.
Yes, as a matter of fact, you can do pretty much anything you want to do. It’s fact…You can drink, smoke, have sex, play with Mary Jane, smoke pot, etc…However, there must be ONE ABSOLUTE standard that shows what is right and wrong. If that standard doesn’t exist and truth is whatever I think is right, than we are headed for trouble! (Read my poem on truth.) If I think it’s right to kill someone, than it’s ok to do so—I mean, after all, I decide what’s right for me! Ponder on this…What if all mankind had fulfillment in life? If this were the case, people would treat each other better because their hearts would have been filled with satisfaction with life and they would see no reason to do each other harm. Then, if all mankind had fulfillment within their souls and hearts, wouldn’t they be able to exercise free will? I mean, if the above case were true, than nobody would need to worry about someone exercising free will because EVERYONE would only care about the interests of the other person…. The fulfillment I speak of is found in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Why? Doesn’t God send people to hell for no apparent reason?
The answer as to why people go to hell would be because everyone likes to disobey God. Because people disobey the law (Ten Commandments), they have to suffer the consequences for breaking the law. So, we all are honestly headed for hell because we break these laws. However, God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Once there was a convicted criminal, who was faced with a $1000 fine and he didn’t even have two cents! Suddenly, someone he doesn’t even know, stands up, pays his fine, and the criminal then finds himself released. In this same way, Jesus paid our fine when He died on the cross for our sins. All we have to do is repent (totally turn from sin) and trust in Jesus the same way we would trust in a parachute before jumping 10,000 feet out of an airplane. So, “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ and make Him the Lord of your life.

W.T. Stace on Compatibilism“Throughout the modern period, until quite recently it was assumed, both by philosophers who denied free will and by those who defended it, that determinism is inconsistent with free will. If a mans actions were wholly determined by chains of causes stretching back into the remote past, so that they could be predicted before hand by a mindwhich knew all the causes, it is assumed that they could not in that case be free. This implies that a certain definition of actions done from free will was assumed, namely that they are actions not wholly determined by causes or predictable beforehand. Let us shorten this by saying that free will was defined as indeterminism. This is the incorrect definition of free will which has led to the denial of free will. As soon as we see what the tru definition is we shall find that the question whether the world is deterministic, as newtonian science implied, is wholly irrelevant to the problem. ...We frame the following rough definition: Acts freely done are those whose immediate causes psychological states in the agent. those whose immediate causes are states of affairs external to the agent. It is plain that if we define free will in this way, then free will certainly exists [compatible with determinism], and the philosophers denial of its exstence is seen to be what it is—non-sense.”Voted for by exquisite mind.
There have been many arguments against W.T. Stace’s views… but I like his position on this (we are currently studying this issue in class) so I couldn’t resist!! -

The only way we have free will is if we listen to what the other people tell us to do. Ohh yea that's right that would not be considered having free will then. We may be able to choose what to do with our life and how to dress, but we will get mocked for doing something bad and we can't chose to do some other stuff without money. So in order to have a free will you have to have money and have noone else around you. sounds like a good life, NOT. So guess what we don't really have free will on earth.
