Obedience and God

Assume there is one definitive god that fits your ideal; would you worship him/her/it?

What I'm getting at is this--do we have to obey a god even if he's kind and wonderful? If we given a fair does of our respect, then do we still need to pray or pledge allegiance to him/her/it?

Going on the idea that there is a definite god, I would not obey him, her, or it despite how good this being is. Even if this god approves my my sexuality, why then must I pray to it. I don't want to live under, serve, or worship any other being.

  Imagine a child saying that to a parent, as they do. It's exactly the same. You are an infant to existence. You are still in the process of defining yourself; you may feel your path in this world is preset, but how do you learn to live in anything beyond that? Why child, go out on your own? You obey your parents for a reason, because they know what is best and you don't. Of course we have struggles coming to terms with if there is a God, what is our relationship towards them? I would think that for starters, this God would be a lot more knowledgeable than us, and a lot more wise. If benevolent, this would be a great incentive to follow them in order to learn as much as this God already has done.

    Well, even parents aren't always right. But, assuming that God is benevolent, that does not mean we have to live under his/her shadow. Just like a child, once we've grow we become independent of our parents. If the two are the same, then it would only be natural to turn away from complete spiritual dependence (that doesn't meaning giving it up entirely).

    yes we grow and move on without our parents. If we asked our parent for advice everytime we made a decision we would have a better chance of making the right one,hopefully. Even then though success is not guaranteed. Why, because we are not God we do not have all the answers, neither do our parents. God the Father is the ultimate parent, He is THE parent. So now if we were to for the sake of this arguement agree with this would it not be foolish to not take His guidance into account. Like you might ask your most excellent and established solicitor/lawyer for advice you would more than likely listen right?

    Granted, that is true--we could assume he knows best; however, that does not mean we are required to worship him, even if he's always right.
    
    Would you worship your father, doctor, or lawyer? Yes, we can go to them for support and advice; but that is not the same as giving yourself into a deity.

  Why should we all obey something that may not exist? Whats going to happen if we dont? We are gonna go to the hot place. Big deal. Im dead anyway. How is it that God always knows better? I want to score in on this newsletter God followers are getting because I must be missing something.

  sry that simple stupidity trhough me off... gyne the greatest thing about God is you dont have to worship him... you decide... remember... he so loved us he gave us free will. in the end you dont have to listen to God just like you dont have to listen to your parents. although i bet it would be nice if every once and a while they could get an thank you for all you have done for me, maybe even a little praise for having brought you up for who you are. but in the end everything is up to you... lame kids throughing around the word worship with no real meaning behind it.
  
  now to answer the topic... no way. you never are obliged to. that is whole dam point of religion. you do it because you believe it to be the right thing to do not because your told to. the God of everthing doesnt need you... on the other hand you may need him.

Why would that make sense? If your significant other is kind and wonderful, and gives you a fair dose of respect, do you still need have allegiance to him/her and show appreciation for the great things s/he's done?

Mine's a great guy and everything, but I really wouldn't start singing in the middle of a crowded building about how awesome he is.

This analogy is not complete. There are major differences you're not taking into account when comparing God and your love.

AND my boyfriend doesn't ask me to appreciate him and the great things he does. I just do.

The only time I bow down to humans is to be respectful in a traditional Japanese home, or when grabbing someone's hand in both of mine and bowing my head down to thank them for helping me incredibly. So yes, I would in a scenario that called for it. As it happens, I would be willing to thank God for a lot, so I would not be adverse to giving Him a bow of gratitude, though most times I just talk with Him.

Obviously not. If you got dumped by a new boyfriend and I told you that there were other fish in the sea, would you be dumbfounded and explain to me that you only date humans and that your last boyfriend could not breathe under water? Is there a specific reason I'm using an analogy to help explain what an analogy is, or are you purposely making it difficult?

I do it all the time, and alcohol only increases the likelihood. I'm sure there are more love songs about girls and boys than there are about God.

Yeah, and God doesn't have sex with me or argue about what time I should've set the alarm for. The analogy cannot be "complete" because there is no person comparable to God. The purpose of the analogy was to prove that it is not ridiculous to show devotion and appreciation to someone you love and appreciate, as the topic suggested. Not to prove that God is just like my lover.

I don't remember the last time God asked me to. Organized religion asks me to all the time, in all sorts of specific manners which seem a bit much to me. I prefer people worship God in there own way.

I don't ask my girlfriend to appreciate me and the great things I do. She just does it. And if she showed absolutely no appreciation or devotion to me, I would feel rather unappreciated and insulted.
