People who are sick of theology polluting pure philosophy-post here

Theology and Philosophy are (no longer at least) synonomous. And they shouldn’t be. I suggest that an AllTheology or AllReligion site be set up for those wishing to offer “God” or other religious constructs without logical aspects as solutions to philosophical problems. ALL IN FAVOUR, SAY HURRAH! All against, say other things.

  • Quit whining - start your own topics

Philosophy can branch into many differet areas i.e. Science, religion, psychology, ethics - it has to do with beliefs. If you have a problem with the focus on religion - START YOUR OWN TOPIC ON SOMETHING YOU ARE INTERESTED IN INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING!

  • Religion and philosophy go together

I’m currently doing a B.A with a double major: religious studies and philosophy. That’s because I believe the two go together. My opinions and worldview are inseperably linked with my religious beliefs, and my resons for those beliefs have both a religious basis, and a logical nature. I argue religion using logic, because I believe that Christianity is a raltional, justified, philosophical position. Conversely, philosophy, in it’s goals and aims is, and must be , religious in nature.

This summer I plan on doing a directed study under my philosophy prof on one of Plantiga’s books. The course is called “warrented christian belief” I may post my term paper on here for people to discuss.

But I do hear your complaint. I don’t like it when christians abandon logic. Christains should learn how to actually argue with people effectively, using valid logical arguments, not simply saying “well, the Bible says so” to someone who does nto believe in the Bible.

    That’s my 2 cents.

  • Of course they go together

What??? This could only be the opinion of those who know nothing about philosophy. I personally am an athiest, but how can you say religion can't be up for philosophical debate. Philosophy literally means the love of knowledge, if religion can't be discussed in philosophy where can it be? I see what people are saying but they've sort of got the wrong end of the stick I think, true many people who hold their religious beliefs wont debate them they just think they are true, but the debate about the religion itself can still exist.

  • nope

Religion really can't be separated from philosophy as it has such an immense bearing on the other. would you really like to see a debate where someone says "why are you for/against (insert topic)?" and the other says, "well, i'd tell you but i'm not allowed, but if i was i'd introduce this passage and we could talk about it?" yes, that would make for such an INTERESTING philosophy thread.

if it honestly bothers you that much set start your own threads with set parameters, such as Gosh I Love You's thread "Give me your views on homosexualiy- NO RELIGION!"

  • Philosophy and religion are incompatible

Religion is a set of beliefs and dogmas accepted uncritically.Religion suppresses the critical faculty. It encourages acceptance of beliefs on authority.Philosophy is completely different from religion. It challenges all authority and stimulates critical faculty.Philosophy is founded on reason and logic whereas religion is founded on faith.Religion is inherited while philosophy is discovered.Philosophy revels in uncertainty and tentative and provisional insights whereas religion is scared of them.Philosophy unhesitatingly discards what is proved to be false, religion holds on to disproved beliefs.Remember the Genesis. Was the world created in 7 days or 15 billion years?Philosophy is philosophy and religion is religion and the twain shall never meet.

  • hurrah!

While in favor of getting rid of a bit of the religion on here.. I know it can not be done entirely. But there IS far too much of “Does God exist?” THAT needs to be gotten rid of.

  • You cannot do it successfully

Only possible if, you eliminate any philoshy dealing with life in general. Even then God plays number one in evry aspect of a believers life. Impossible for them to be Philosophic without God. This site cannot exist without spiritual, just like higher concious life cannot exist without the three main ingredients: Soul, body and spirit are one. So is all things in the universe.

  • No

A great deal of philosophy has to do with thoughts upon God, religious differences, authoirty in relation to religion, where creation came from, ideas on destiny, free will, purpose, morality, whether right and wrong exist outside of viewpoints and perceptions. All of these, at the very least, tie into supernatural theories.

While I agree falling back on blindly supporting whatever your religion tells you is not all that deep, I must add that blindly opposing anything religion has to offer is just as bad. Just because it comes from religion or just because someone you know to typically pontificate tired old quotes doesn't mean a truth can't come about. Analyze what is being said and agree or debunk as needed. If you are tired of debunking the same old nonsense: ignore them.

  • how and why

There are only really two great questions. How and Why?

Science tends to deal with the How and Philosophy deals with the why, religion also deals with the why and so they are inseperable. Why don't you post a topic and I will do my best to discuss that without the use of the word 'God' or equivalent

  • HURRAH!

I think I know what you mean: all these closed-minded zealots drive me nuts too. They can't look at the other side of things and they think everyone should believe like them.

  • And there in lies the problem...

All philosophic and theologic paths, if absolutely correct, will lead to one ultimate truth: thus God seems to be the final answer and ultimate truth. In the majority of topics, throughout history, God ends up in the mix.

  • Absolutely!

i completely agree. Religion is so closely tied up with the lack of logic - faith, a core principle is based on trusting your heart over head. philosophy on the other hand, requires a person to be able to let go of all - and i mean absolutely all - preconceived notions/ conventional trains of thought. In order to be able to release oneself from these ties to rigid thinking, religion and other emotion related obstacles should be removed. unless of course one happens to be a particularly objective person who can handle separating two or keeping one in a 'limbo' of sorts until conflicts of ideas can be resolved.

  • Hand in hand

Most everything can have a philosophy, I do think that religions of all kind have its place in philosophy. Paganism, Wicca, Christians, Mormons, Thelmic...... Every one of them have some philosophies to share, you may think some are wrong and some are right, that's why this website is here. You don't like it...Design your own.
