In colonial times, at least one state had an Established Church (Anglican, Church of England) The 10% tithe for the support of the church was levied on everyone regardless of what they supported. The tax collector collected the tithe right along with the regular property taxes. This is why the push for NO established religion.

From this, we get the word loved by the spellers in Elementary Schools. Antidisestablishmentarianism. Figure it out....I think it means that you DON'T want to give up the established church practice of collecting monies.
How ironic that no where in the Constitution or Bill of Rights are the words "Seperation of Church and State"
There are however references of "Freedom of Religion" - which means that one is free to practice their religion or not -
Is it safe to say the Bill of Rights limits the government. It doesn't grant rights or privileges to the people?
The term "Freedom of Religion" does not equate however, IMO, to "Freedom FROM Religion.

hmmmmmI tend to believe that in the sence that the constitution does not grant rights and privileges, and given the opening statements. That all things that are not specificaly described as not a right , is indeed to be deemed a right. At least thats my take on it, whether it be religeon, or travel or any other circumstance that could be imagined by the human mind , and not covered in prohibition.Voted for by Dwn.

Good picturesWhy not freedom from religion? We have the inalienable right to have freedom of thought... Why do you so wish for others to share your morals and values. I will be free from religion and if anyone tries to force it upon me then God help them.Voted for by petethemeat.
Funnily enough the US founding fathers desired a difference between the State Anglicanism of the UK (which still is the case) and the new colonies. The founding fathers were secularists. -
Huh?I don't understand what the point is. You described what we have. Freedom to practice the religion of our choice.Voted for by Weydon.
