What are they and what do they mean ??
Do you think that the schools do a good job with teaching children the right kind of words ?
Should they use more imagination with it ?
Do you think that the schools have forgotten about the old language ?
I have noted a lot of teens write about cutting/dark stuff etc
A lot of them use the I and put i instead
What do you think of that ? Does it bother you ?

I findThat writing and vocabulary are fast becoming lost arts. We are starting to see the results of a couple of generations of under taught under achievers. I blame parents mostly for letting the children slide on vocabulary. I can't take the time to think up new words, the existing ones give me more than enough of a challenge.25% Voted for by mudgod, nitefire.

Made up words huh?Personally, I do have my own made up words. Schweetastic is one that goes around quite a bit around here with my friends and I. However, just because I have my own made up words, does not mean that I exclude vocabulary from the dictionary. In fact, I'm one of the brightest students of my class, I strive with vocabulary and knowledge, I'm smart, I can write a five page essay in a simple 10 minutes using words people would never imagine possible in there existence. Yet I still burst with amazing personality and creativity. I happen to find parents no where near at fault with the children and lack of vocabulary. Why?25% Voted for by wanderingstarlet, pnktrky.
My parents never graduated, they don't talk brilliantly, but I've managed to succeed and surpass. -
MehSometimes made up words bother me, and end up as a passing phase anyway. Sometimes they stick around and I still roll my eyes when people use them. "Guesstimate" comes to mind... Sometimes they're alright. Opinion, really.25% Voted for by Weydon, Oral Fixation.
But it's not a terrible thing that signals the downfall of education. That's how we have the language we have now. It evolves and creates around what we do and say in society. Some people complain about "Judgement" being now accepted over "Judgment", but just look at Middle English and Old English. We evolve language, sometimes entire words based on a popular slang. -
wellIm 19 therefore still a teen and it drives me nuts when people shorten everything in messages and emails and posts. Its not the much more effort to hit shift I. What else is your pinky finger waiting to do anyway? Sure its slang and I do find myself slip when I am trying to type to my friends fast but its gotten to the point where you cant even figure out the word they are trying to say.Voted for by Stepherz804.
I am a fan of old english. The where for art thous and such. I dont have any words I say they arent already in existance. I have words that I have different definitions for. There is a word that my friend and I used to say all the time for the very sometimes gross public displays of affection that when we looked it up it meant something off the wall.
Just because peoples vocabulary is slipping doesnt make it the teachers fault. If a kid doesnt want to learn they wont. Nor is it the parents fault. We are growing up in a time where money fuels everything and parents want more for their children. That parents part was obviously there before but now its not marriage for money its work for money. The downfall is on the person. Not everyone else. -
YbcozI think i have some words which have still not found its place in the dictionary.... like, for instance words likeVoted for by Jackymania.
a) Fantabulous.....a combo (Sorry stephrz!) of fantastic and fabulous.
Imagineering.... of Imagine & engineering.
c) Ybcoz........ ha ha ...this is fun...if you have not guessed it, well it stands for WHY Because...... this is bad grammer, i know. But i often use it while arguing a point or in an animated conversation. I, forgive me for my indulgence, use it as an start to explain a point or substantiate a reasoning, as if i have previously analysed the point i have just made. I myself am not sure where i picked up this habit, and this habit was made known to me by a friend...poking fun at me...:-)
Yeah....it is funny, Ybcoz......... ha ha ha.

re : I find
I do agree. I think that parents got so caught up with work etc that they didn't spend enough time in helping with their childrens school work. However, it's not all the parents fault. They do have books etc with helping. I think that the biggest thing is that a lot of the teens ( not all ) have gotten lazy.Eaven-Alexander
