Too Young To Marry?

  • Not an age issue per se.
It could work at any age, really, but a marriage is less likely to be built on any real foundation of friendship, mutual respect, and appreciation when the involved are young.

Yes, teens love, feel the same emotions, and act on them just like a much older person would and sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. I've known thirteen year olds more responsible than some forty year olds. But a teen's body is changing, the brain is still developing, and the hormonal shifts of growing and maturing play havoc with the emotional state.

A marriage is a real commitment, and the subsequent childbirth, financial pressures, physical demands, and work strain the patience and the best relationships. If there is no foundation of friendship and respect (which takes time to build) the marriage will result in stress, anger, drama, and misery.

Infatuation and being in love with love can happen at any age, of course, but speaking bluntly from my own experience, it's much more likely to occur earlier than later in life.

  • Any questions?
I'm 44 it's been awhile since I was 17 and I have never been female. So let me attack this question as if I was you farther. Bang Bang Bang...Bang Bang Bang. BUT DAD! SLAM! Screech... Screech! that was the sound of your window being nailed shut. you being put in your room and your door being fitted with a pad lock. Bang Bang Bang! and that was the sound of a sign being put on your door that says 'don't open till Christmas 2010'

  • Nah
I'm not against them moving in. It's awfully soon by most standards, but this is the age that they should be allowed to spread their wings (too much?) if they want. But MARRIED at that young? While perfectly legal, it's quite a bit much.

  • When is getting marriage too soon?
    Hello Mom,
My boyfriend is 18 now, he lives in his own place. I am 17 and I am moving with him. By this time next year we will be married...

Okay, well, it probably wouldn't have been said like that BUT you get the idea. What would you say?
