what are we meant to do?

Have you ever wondered, like me, "what is our purpose?". Is it to live and to die? Or are we all part of some great, unknown design? Or maybe it's just to be judged, to end up in heaven or hell?

What's your opinion?

  • Weeell,
    Yes, yes, no, no.

Those are loaded questions. I'm not sure I can do any single one of them justice in the couple minutes I have. Full responses would probably take essay-lengths if not novel.

    Still, a few thoughts.

I think if you focus on "grand design" and "purpose", you lose sight of the little things, like your kid discovering a turtle in the backyard, the lavender color of the pre-storm clouds, the shapes the tree branches make against the night sky, and that a friend of five years stopped calling you on Tuesdays and started phoning on Wednesdays.

There is something to be said for an irreligious existence. If this world, this life, this reality, is all that we have, shouldn't we make the best of it rather than meandering about, waiting for the good part to begin?

Overall, yes, the world seems meaningless and tiring, and a vicious cycle of the same-old, same-old materialistic angst. But life is in the details. This doesn't necessarily deny religious doctrine - but why live if you're just waiting for that next step, waiting for your life (or afterlife) to begin?

So in short, I think our "higher" purpose isn't really relevant. We'll know soon enough anyway; everyone dies.

What's relevant is the here and now. I don't think it should be overlooked.

we will never know... not for sure....

this is a question that is simply useless to ask...
it's like being locked in a small dark rom with a stranger, there are no clocks in the room, and you just keep asking "what time is it"... you will never get an answer.... no matter how many times you ask...
