Obsession

How does one break free of obsession, or a negative routine? I thought about it and I feel like there is always going to be that predisposition to make the same mistake again. How do we know when we are free of any psychological addiction?

How do you know when a cheater becomes strong enough not to cheat? Or a drug? Or a rapist? Does anyone really have power over their predispositions?
  • Different Terms
Obsession is different to addiction. An addiction is a strong desire to follow a pattern of behaviour due to the pleasurable stimulus it produces. Whether this stimulus is only measly pleasant or not, addiction becomes paramount when the desire for it is stronger than the pleasure it produces, it produces a secondary pleasure (like an affirmation pleasure or pleasure of comfort or routine) and is unable to be repulsed even if to serious detriment of self and others around them. Obsession is the opposite; it is a fascination due to negative stimulus, and is overwhelimingly powerful in one's desire for the avoidance of pain and discomfort, over and above rationality. The obsession is fueled because continuing in the obsession brings temporary relief and therefore is painful, disturbing or annoying to deny. They are similar properties of mentality spurred on by opposing stimulus.

  • Possible
If it's a true obsession it's hard, but it's possible. If it's a physical act--drugs, cheating, gambling, etc it takes strong will power and good motivation. Counseling can help those with severe problems. The longer you get away from your problem the better life will seem. It will often become easier to resist.
