Why do people pick and choose morals from the bible?

Basically, I was reading someone's EXTREMELY bigoted opinion on Christianity and homosexuality when I thought of something -- whenever I bring up examples of poor morals in the old testament, I am told they were nullified by the new testament. That seems to be the case for everything except when the Christian in question is arguing against homosexuality. Note that the verse condemning homosexuality is Lev 18:22, clearly old testament. If being gay is wrong, why don't people sell their daughters into slavery or kill people who work on the Sabbath?

Exodus 21:7
If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do.

Exodus 35:2
For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.
  • Christians are Hopeless Fanatics
To me, it appears Christians will make ANY random argument to appear correct, even if they clearly contradict themselves.

  • There's a reason
We call it OLD TESTAMENT and NEW TESTAMENT. There is the Old Law, the Old Convenant, and there's the New Law, and the New Convenant. Conclusion, we should be basing our morals on the New Testament. Again, being gay is NOT wrong(how can feeling a certain way be helped?) People can't FORCE themselves into heterosexuality, that's ridiculous. But the new testament also says that no FORNICATORS will enter the kingdom of heaven(gay or straight - !!). It has nothing to do with your sexual orientation, it has everything to do with acting morally and being righteous in the eyes of God.

  • Because
It is in the New Testament, simple as that.

because it serves as a widely accepted source of god's truth. an arguable version of proof, but nonetheless, it's seen as infallible by the largest of religious establishments.
pick and choose; absolutely. interpretation is key, and as the words are that of the holy text, they are inarguable by your peers and sanctioned by god.
it is just silly to me, that this flagrent misuse of language and morality has become a easy out for the spiritually scared and corrupt.
