China revokes visa of gold medalist, Darfur activist Cheek

Ok,so he wasn't participating in these Olympic games. But it's still disrespectful. China has "diplomatic ties" to the Sudan in Darfur, and Cheek is an advocate against the unrest and cruelty going on there. When he won the Gold in Torino he donated "his $25,000 USOC bonus to Darfur and implored his sponsors to do the same. "

He is not a terrorist, but speaks out against a situation he agrees with. Someone who believes in this very firmly, obviously--but nothing harmful outside of words and awareness.

Is this proper reason enough to deny visa to view and support your country in the Olympics, especially when you are a former medal winner yourself?

Every country has the right to deny a visa to anyone, for no reason at all. But this is not a good reason regardless. Just more evidence that something amiss and cruel is going on in China. A complete lack of freedom and rights.

There are those that would argue that the Olympics should not be used as a device for politics. Not only do I see that as possibly irrelevant, I also see it as the opposite. This is indeed a time when all countries can come together and compete in pure athleticism, feeling national pride. But it also a time for global awareness. Should an opportunity to raise such awareness of horrors such as Darfur be ignored in favor of sports?
