including the concept known as the soul

say it loud! im an animal and im proud!
yes, humans and animals are generally the same... if a human has a soul then an animal has a soul and that the souls if they exist are the same in general. it is ridiculous to me that many believe humans have souls which are different or better than that of animals. further, some say humans have what is referred to as free will and that animals do not and that animals simply use instinct to function and humans can choose to disobey their instinct. That I also disagree with. Animals have personalities just like humans; animals are not all the same just like humans. for instance some animals share and some don't; this is evident on nature documentaries with mothers and their young; some bear mothers share with their young other not so much; is that not what many people call free will? I can not imagine how anyone can reply to this topic and say that somehow religiously or theosophically that humans are not animals or that humans have a what is commonly referred to as god in their soul and animals do not or that somehow we are different in any way other than the obvious.

No
The comparison between humans and a great many animals is undeniable. Some more than others I'd argue. There are obvious similarities on multiple levels. However it is even more obvious that there are DIFFERENCES between humans and other animals.
More similar than many definitions may give credit to? Sure. The SAME? Not likely.

"animal" is a label, nothing more.
I tend to disagree with crazyhead. We are all bound by some level of instinct or inherit nature, I think the difference between human and animal is determined in our range of empathy. We may see "human"-like qualities in apes, just as much as we may be led to have seen the japanese as animals back in WWII.Everything has its own intelligence and singularity, it is our own shortcomings in awareness that prevents us from detecting this at times.
Propaganda, whether religious or governmental, is the reason some foolhearted individuals will be fundamentally opposed to the idea of parallel intelligence in "animals".

Here is the difference
Gen 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.Gen 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
God made the animals each after their own kind. Bugs after the bug kind. Cattle after the cattle kind. Animals after the animal kind. But what kind was man made after? The God kind. This is what most don't see. God is recreating Himself in man. And as dwn rightly pointed out, there is a spirit in man that is not in animals.
Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
It is this, our human spirit, that allows the spirit of God to join with our spirit to give us understanding from God.

Because if you agree with evolution, we are animals and (according to your bible) have dominion over each other. In which case you cannot say what is human or not. Man could simply be a metaphor for a level of consciousness, and not a species.
If you disagree with evolution... umm.. goodluck.
