I think to be a good teacher, you need to be able to find the key to unlock the student. Each student has different ways of learning and different interests. I believe for the teacher to be able to teach a student to the fullest, they need to look at the requirements of the individuals who wish to learn.
One area I feel teachers tend to lack these days is the direct experience, so many teach by reading a text book. This makes the lesson dull and two dimentional. A teacher who has experiance in the fields they teach can throw in an occational story, ( a story which teaches a lesson will stay in the students minds long after they have forgotten all the text books).

I think what makes a good teacher is someone who can make themselves understood no matter how difficult the subject. Also another aspect of a good teacher is one who can inspire a student to learn by finding their individual way of learning and by using what interests them teach them by relating a subject to that individual students likes and interests I think that would make a student more likely to learn new things.

Imagine doing the same thing year after year after year… But of course the argument above is not logical- because not all teachers are evil. Now students on the other hand…

I do not think that the failing system of education and the quality of educators should fall to the teachers. I attend a private school with roughly 13 student per class. In this situation it is easy for teachers to maintain control while presenting information to students. What needs to be realized is that the students, not the individual that make a teacher great. A classroom devoid of anyone who wants to learn will burn out even the greatest of educators. However, a class filed with minds yurning for knowlege will not create a great teacher, it will make those already talented within the field better.

Well, first off, niceness won’t teach you the difference between their, there, and they’re. It is not our ‘job’ to be ‘nice’. We work, the same as any Joe at McDonalds. This is a J O B. Not a life. I can speak from my own experience that the reason teachers change is because they are only human as well. How much negativity could you take everyday before it finally sunk in and effected your own personality. I am not much older than my students, but I can’t believe the negativity rampantly cool in the teen society. Sorry to vent, but not everything is the ‘Adult’s’ fault.

teachers start nasty then calm down a bit and go nicer…unless theyre generally annoying, but if the get like a higher position they get a big power trip

evilness is necessary sometimesVoted for by classical beauty.
If teachers were too nice you’d walk all over them and you’d never learn anything and education would be pointless. Even though sometimes teachers are too strict, i agree that sometimes it is necessary, or you wouldn’t respect them. I think the right balance between nice and strict makes a good teacher.

I think that disaplin (sp?) makes a good teacher. I think strict teachers are sometime’s the best. Because even though you might see it as mean, she/he does not see it that way. They would see it as doing there job. They will do what they have to do, to get you to learn.

I think that characterization of teachers is artificialVoted for by nihilismisdead.
Such a characterization is artificial. I take for example the social worker. She works at a centre for over twenty years hearing all of the worst stories possible of how people need help. At first she does her best to help them. But after hearing some of the same stories over and over she is less and less willing to help and more willin to stick to standard procedures.
Teachers are the same way. At first they are energized and full of life. They are willing to help when needed and willing to do extra. After a while of seeing failure though, they are more willing to just stick to procedure.
The education system does not sit entirely on the culpability of teachers, but it would not hurt to get motivation. When I graduated from high school there were 10 teachers who were older than 60 years and 4 teachers who were under 25 years (that’s the entire staff). 1 of the 10 teachers genuinely wanted to help (mid-life crisis) and 3 of the 4 new teachers started up societies based on their courses.
In the old days teachers used to have to read new materials on teachings. Every teacher in America and Canada had the “Morality of Education” by John Dewey in their desks. Today the only books teachers have are those for courses… none for professional development.

Teaching,an exciting endevorVoted for by suseann.
Teaching while an inpired and compassionate endevor. Is a learning prosses it’s self.A students mine while it should be an open book ready to take-on revealations. Is’nt always just that.It takes a willingness on the instructores part to reach a mind infected with other obsessions,to open that door to accepted knowledge. The mark of a great teacher,is to make subjects so exciting, the student can’t resist.

I believe a teacher is a person who has knowledge and it is a student's choice to learn. I have taught and have always said "I do not teach, others learn." It is not the job of a teacher to fit the personal profile of each and every student nor it is the student's job to fit the teacher's. I believe a person who makes a career choice should do for themselves, be it a teacher a plumber or artist. The person should be doing it because it is rewarding to themselves, not to help anyone or live their live's vicariously through others. Sometimes, I think the whole education system should be overhauled. This may be a radical thought for some but I feel that students should be allowed to leave the school system at the age of 13 (of course) be able to return at anytime for any reason and must return by the age of 17 to complete their studies. I know many of my fellow students as well as myself had little interest in the school system between those ages. However, we all had a very keen interest in learning a little later in life and still do today. I do not blame the teachers I simply wasn't interested at that time, to be blunt, it was boring!

My good teacherVoted for by Sebrina.
I figure that good teacher doesn’t has fixed definition. Everyone has his own good teacher. For me, a teacher’s method could fit me beautifully and I could show respect for her. Then, she is my good teacher. As for evil or nice, different settings have different kinds of teachers. For instance, in Taiwan, our prep school doesn’t need strict teachers. If a teacher was filled with professional knowledge and she was also hilarious, she would be very popular. That’s because the students in prep school study hard willingly, and they have desire to learn new things. Teachers there don’t need to be strict. On the contrary, the teacher who teaches children or teenagers may need to be strict sometimes, because she has responsibility to have them to learn. Different types of sudents need different kinds of teachers. In my opinion, a well-motivated student need a nice teacher or a nice teaching method that is suitable for him prefectly. An evil teacher will be needed for those students who wouldn’t show respect for their nice teachers. So, a good teacher could be an angel or evil.
