I was looking through the options for a profile, and how many people knew you could associate music to your profile? (not that it really works yet).
How many people are tired of facing the same old cycle of topics and the block list right below the sign.
I love many things about this site such as the chatterbox and the messaging system (the one that pops up with a message when someone has replied to something you said).
But really, I think this site could go for the gusto and try to make this more focused around the individual profiles. I wish it were easier to get into contact with people who have left allphilosophy as well (like an messaging system that won't let you necessarily see their email, but allow you to contact them). If this were possible, it would be easier to get traffic, and the more interesting people we bring back (like Grant, remember that guy?), the more flavour this site has. Even escentric people like Moshiak coming back momentarily would spice up the works.
I just feel lamentable because I grew with these people as my rivals and idols, and *snap* just like that, they fade into non-existence. Never to be heard of again, never to even have a reminiscent argument with. It makes this site feel haunted and hollow, a shell of old debates come and gone. To think that people come and go so easily takes away from those inspirational vibes that philosophy should be all about.
And sometimes it feels like people are afraid to throw sketchy ideas out there, to go against the main stream. But it is hard to if you don't have a significant base of people who share your opinion. If everyone on this site has moderate views, we inadvertently shun off radical opinions.
I would love to see some things mixed up for a change.

TrueI wholeheartedly agree with you Molzahn. I have had some great fun on this site. It really needs an overhall, not just to fix the numerous bugs but to make it somewhat of a community. People often come and go, annoyed by the lack of action. However success breeds success, and the more members we recieve the more interesting and dynamic the boards will be. We need some new debates and we need some new members. However this site needs some radical revamping, and I intend to email Kevin about this....21% Voted for by petethemeat, Molzahn, Jessa M., Weydon, maemoce. (7 total)

Another thing to add...an FAQ of how to do things (like post topics or underline, bold, italics, and "how to add pictures"15% Voted for by Molzahn, Jessa M., Weydon, maemoce, zga.

This could go right above (or replace) the block of general topics. Having a topic post on how to embed is fine and dandy, but its a pain in the ass for newcomers to have to try to hunt it down. The more fluently and quickly someone can adapt to express themselves here, the more articulated their thoughts can be. -
I thinkThat we as the "core" (though fluid) group should seek to engage others more. Especially new comers. I have noticed that Weydon does this quite often and in an inviting manner, I might add. As philosophy is a search for truth, it is in that frame of mind that we should engage others. Although I might be guilty of hammering sometimes, it is not conducive to constuctive discussion. And don't forget, the tribulation will be starting soon (No Weydon, you can't just watch it with popcorn in an easy chair). LOL9% Voted for by mudgod, Molzahn, Weydon.

Im inclinedto agree with all of you. I lived on this site for a good year or so. Checking it religiously. I swing by now and its like a ghost town. No ones talking and more importantly no ones debating. I loved getting into debates on here....what happened? lol9% Voted for by Stepherz804, Molzahn, abuyi.

InquiryIt is possible that if the site gets some HUGE overhaul (while hopefully keeping some key features like the messaging system and an IMPROVED, non-scrolling chatterbox so you can see and talk while reading and typing philosophies), it could have to wipe the system clean. Blank board, no philosophies posted. Would everyone be okay with this possibility?6% Voted for by Weydon, Molzahn.
As someone who holds an unhealthily large post-count, I have to say I'd be pretty okay with it. It seems a bit jarring--GASP, all my philosophy LOST! But really, who goes back to the ancient posts? Sometimes a one-time-visitor finds an old topic and posts something on a topic from the 3 years ago and you go "Oh yeah..." and then it goes away again without any further input. In fact, doing so may even be a bit progressive, "tired" topics will have to be re-defended a few more times again lol "Another gay debate..."? I think not! One of the FIRST gay debates!
I dunno, what do you all think? How often do you go back and revel and learn in the older posts? If this happens, will anyone be upset? -
Yes and NoI don't remember, Molzhan-- are you also an AllPoetry frequenter? I'm a regular on AllPoetry, more so than I am on AllPhilosophy, in fact, and if you look at AllPoetry's community, it's simply exploding with people. For instance, the "chatterbox" you mentioned, though more or less left derelict and unoccupied here, is always, ALWAYS active on AllPoetry, save for perhaps the wee hours of three and four in the morning, though even then I've seen people in it.6% Voted for by Xelgaroth, Molzahn.
I would, however, agree that AllPhilosophy could use an overhaul-- I think that Kevin is more or less concerned about the upkeep of AllPoetry than he is of AllPhilosophy, predominantly because it's much more popular, and, let's face it, that's where the money is. I certainly don't fault him for that, but it would be nice to have an occasional update-- you know, fixing of bugs (like the atrocious tendency for replies comments to, rather than stay anchored on the comment to which you were replying, fly up to the top of the page, or, often too, to simply vanish altogether, or simply not send in the first place. These and others might be nice to fix.
But also from a community standpoint, I agree, Molzhan. There are precious few of us on this site. You, Weydon, Bunny, Mudgod, Tech (not sure-- is he still around?), and-- oh god-- that Brew Kline idiot, myself, and a few others, we're kinda a miniature Philosophy breakfast club.
My teenage years have been spent lazily discussing various philosophic points, if not very well all too often. I began attending AllPhilosophy at age 13, and I am now 16. It's been enjoyable nonetheless. For this reason, however, it's rather sad when people leave, because in a group this small (that is, a small group of "regulars" if you will; there are always random people who wander in from AllPoetry out of curiosity then leave again), the departure of one is rather noticeable.
It's an odd sort of thing, we few here. All of us have varying opinions, from the extremely conservative Christian Mudgod to the Inclusivist Christianity of Weydon to the Atheism of Expensive Thinker to you, and so on, we have a smorgasbord of philosophical ideas presented. Though we number few, we are certainly a hodgepodge, a motley crew.
It would be nice to see this place fixed up a bit; I rather feel like we're members of a small club who meet in a run-down old artists' warehouse.

IAbsolutely love that song ruminous in the song listing... Check it out... That is what I call truly beautiful.6% Voted for by TeChNoWC, Molzahn.
Thank you for this topic.... The last time I cared to look at the music profiles was about 18 months ago, and I listened to that song... And the sheer sense of 'uplifting nostalgia' blew me away...
Pete especially, check it out and tell me what you think. -
Inquiry 2If we were to reboot the matrix-- uh I mean... allphilosophy. We would need to send at least one message to all of the old users (on their registered email accounts) to advertise for the new age.Voted for by Molzahn.
I'm sure I could organize some cgi animation to be done to welcome in the new format (assuming the higher ups go through with this) and advertise on youtube and other alike sites.
Some things that I never want to see on this site
-pop up advertisements
-overly dramatic reformation of how the topics and posts work (we're unique, why change it!)
- [add some of your own in the comments] -
MaybeSomething we need is an option to sort opinions on a thread by "popularity" or "date made"Voted for by Molzahn.
Going through old topics to find a new post is sometimes troublesome. But this would be an obvious easy fix. -
You know what would be cool!?Having a minifeed of the most recent posts done by users.Voted for by Molzahn.
I always see people online, and surely they are commenting, but it's hard to find what the newest comments are.
If there was a minifeed of most recent comments by users, it would be easier to spark a discussion and keep it going. I think it would be an amazing feature for allphilosophy~~
(by minifeed, I mean on the mainpage, which shows new posts cast by all users) -
VoidI'm essentially just bumping this topic before it gets lost in the void. Not that I think it will ever happen, just because I think it gets funnier the more time that passes and none of this happens.Voted for by Weydon.
To make this topic more legitimate, I would like to reiterate my call for a stationary chat bar, which allows you to scroll the philosophies but not lose sight of the chat. It will make chatting much easier (and likely). I think so far we at Allphilosophy have roughly 30 chat "conversations" per year. I say "conversations" because nearly half of those are someone saying something, then hours or days later someone else sees it and responds. 15 conversations a year may still seem generous to some, but you are forgetting that sometimes people from allpoetry or storywrite come here to use the chat without being flooded. So they can really get down to business. That's right, folks. Our chat bar is essentially a private chat for the sister sites. Ouch.
PS Nobody vote for this topic or it will be shot up to the middle of the page and no one will read it. Which brings me to my next point: Keep the voting system, lose the "most popular goes up top" option. Keep posts in order of time, not popularity. They tend to get lost otherwise. -
Kudos!Obviously I don't like letting this topic die. It will either help the change actually happen, or become terribly humorous how it never does!Voted for by Weydon.
I noticed when starting a topic today that the "Topic Starting Bug" has been fixed. Where it used to be you tried to start a topic and you were bought back to the topic starting page, and think that it didn't load--but it did. And anyone who never started a topic would repost it about 8 times and we'd have muddled response positions lol Well, this is no longer the case! Now you start a topic and go straight to the topic you started! YAY! Progress???

I look forward to our beer in the afterlife, whenever that may end up being haha
