Bible: More like Guide lines anyways?

so what i want to know is, is the bible more or less a set of guidelines? did Keira Knightley say it right in the pirates of the Caribbean, “It’s only a set of guidelines anyways!” dont get me wrong here, i’m not comparing the bible to the pirates code but the statement to it.

• Recipes

  Have you ever tried to make a cake? If so, you know that you must follow a recipe. Now, of course you can look at it one of two ways. The recipe is the way the cake must be made, or the recipe is a set of guidelines towards making some kind of cake. Now the first one speaks for itself. If you want a cake of the nature of the recipe, you must follow the recipe as closely to the letter as you can. But if it is merely a set of guidelines, you can add a few other things in with the recipe or leave a few things out. But once you have done this, you no longer have the recipe you once did for that particular cake. You have an entirely new cake with a different formula. Now, the thing to recognize regarding the Bible is that it claims to be the recipe for the 'Ultimate Life'. Once you treat it as a set of guidelines, you cannot help but get something less than the ultimate.

    ah, but i have made some tastey cakes by adding a dash of nutmeg here and a teaspoon of cinnimon there. i could go on forever. (add chocolate). give it some ganash (sp). and it always turns out better than the origional recipe. ask anyone, if you know what you are doing you get some really good things, if you dont, not so good.

      yeah, but I bet you wouldn't like it if I added two cups of chille powder to your cake. :P This illustrates quite well a point I've previously made about interperting the bible: It doesn't mean *just* what it says literally, but it also doesn't mean something that contradicts what IS said. Just like adding a bit of chocolate powder to a cake helps the flavor, expanging on the ideas and themes in the Bible and developing them into a systematic theology really helps add flavour to religion. But on the other hand, just like adding a cup or two of chilli powder to a cake would make it taste horrible, so adding certain things to the bible and to christianity would be a Bad Idea(tm). Steve

        two cups of chile powder eh? well thats interesting! i wonder how many times i would have to double the recipe before i had a hint of chile flavour to a cake??? deffinately would be good if you added a few different things, balance out the hot and all. see, adding chile powder doesnt really change anything. (quantity matters) same with the bible, the contradictions will aways be there, no matter how much you add of anything else, those contradictions will still be there

          Ok guys, everyone always asks "But what about the contradictions in the Bible?" I'm asking WHAT CONTRADICTIONS? Can anybody actually give me an example???

    Sticking with the cake subject.. if you add something to a cake which is not stated in its recipe then you, in essence, create a new recipe.. as was already said here. So adding *anything* to the Christian (or any other) religion would actually *change* the religion and make it no longer Christianity. It can be based on Christianity, it can seem like Christianity, it can be better or worse than Christianity.. but if anything is changed about Christianity, then that is no longer what you have. Different interpretations of the Bible, however.. that may or may not change whether a religion can be called Christianity, depending on what exactly the change is. But I'll end this here because I don't know how to relate that last thought to cake, heh.
