Is philosophy the search for what it is to be human? Or is it something more?

Hmmmm
Well, I am wondering what you mean by 'human.' Humans are a species, just like cats and dogs, and there is really no philosophy behind that. Philosophy is not the basis of human existance, we would exist without philosophies, we just wouldn't be the same in the sense that we would have no morals or dependent behaviors. If by 'human' you meant a species that has morals and dependent behaviors, than I would say 'yes.' Philosophy is everywhere, every time you ask a question or create a theory, and I would say that humans got their morals and behaviors from a theory that someone came up with way back when, that idea became the basis of human behavior. Everything we do is based on some sort of question or it has a reason, so I ask you, where would we be if we didn't have those reasons behind actions? The human race would still exist, but would we be as evolved? And, seeing as I believe that philosophy started with one basic idea of how we should behave, how did the idea of philosophy grow and get to be what you and I know it as?

Interesting
I'd say, in a sense, philosophy IS what is it be human. The ability to think abstractly and put reasons behind actions.
I should note that I don't consider "philosophy" as exclusive a club as others. I think a group of kids hanging out talking about a movie and why it was good, or people expressing their love, is just as much philosophy as discussing the legitimacy of a person's rights. I find all introspection (and "extrospection", if you will) to be beautiful philosophy.
As far as philosophy being the search for what is to be human: Only when the question and though process specifically presses this, such as this one lol

Philosphy is ...
It's the search for meaning in an otherwise neutral world, the endless need for purpose, individual integrity, survival, and importance. Without some kind of philosophy to live by and support, we lose our self-worth. Therefore, it's the pursuit of pacifying the anxiety of being alive.

And way back when is inaccurate. There are as many new philosophies on what human societies believe to be true created today, as there were yesterday.
