Clothing and Attitude

I was recently reading an artical about fashion in the school newspaper I was approched by a friend and she complined about it. It said:”Goth clothing is quite ugly, and all you people are doing is conforming not to conform…” Does any one agree or disagree?

  • Conforming

I agree with your school newspaper. Not the ugly part, since that's just a matter of opinion. But it is fact that dressing in a style that is nearly identical to everyone else in the group you wish you be most like is just conforming.

I am not trying to insult you. Everyone who is no longer 4 does it. I wear jeans and a t-shirt almost everyday. I do not wear pink. I spike my hair. I do these things to present the image I most like. I am not going to go pontificating that I do this because it's simple and comfortable, because I do make sure none of my shirts are oversized or have unicorn fairy princesses on them and if I don't have gel I make sure I wear a hat.

While it may be stupid to label someone something and then think nothing else of them, it's more stupid to not accept that gneralizing certain styles into categories is just a thing to do. This type of food is known as fruit. This type of food is known and dairy. They are both food that is good to eat. This ethnic background is known as Hispanic. This ethnic background is known as Caucasian. They are both people that can do the same things and be likable or annoying. Dressing in all black and sometimes even black fancy dresses or pirate-looking clothes and wearing fancy black nail polish and make-up to present the idea that you're not like everyone else (and obviously don't care...considering you purposely bought and wear this style) is known as "goth". Wearing dockers and polos and styling your hair all nice and pretty is known as "preppy". None of this means anything to the type of person you are. Neither are inherently better are worse, neither should feel superior for being so damn wise to be able to choose to be a noncomformist.

  • Fuck that...

I think that Clothing is only a meere reflection of attitude and decisions. Your only given two choices: Conform or not. Everybody has to do something.

  • Goths

I am, what most would concider, to be a "goth". Goth though. is a type of music. At least it is now. It used to be a type of achetechture, and before that, it was a Germanic tribe..."the goths". But for the purpose of this dicussion. Goth is dark and black and all that jazz. I wear makeup, my entire clothing concists of black. So as todays labels would go, I am goth. If I were to label myself, I would agree. As far as the whole conforming to unconformity goes. I both Dissagree and agree. I agree because that is what "goths" do. Though. the only reason it is that way is because of labels. Most goths wear black clothing to express themselves, the sadness and darker side that life brings....most are into the darker subculture and listen to the same types of music. but they arent conforming to anything. They are just being themselves. But they are put into that grounp on unconformers and when you have a group of people doing the same thing. If eventually becomes conformity.

Goth, to me, isnt so much clothing as it is a lifestyle. Seeing things in a darker, much more realistic perspective. It is embracing the darker side of life that most fear, such as death...Most goths realize this inevitability and accept it. Other more "normal" people, tend to run from it, or dont think anything of it until they realize its comming or have a near death expierence. And Than, they see things, a bit more as most goths do.

They style we call goth today, ALSO stems from punk, another label or sterotype comming from music. Punk was angray and hated this cruel world. Goth is more macabre in the sence, "we are saddend by this cruel world" Most of this info Im expressing come from Voltaire, not the philosopher, ironically, enough; but the "goth spokesperson of sorts.

Everywhere you go there will be labels: Goth-dark black, morbid, Satanic Punk- multicolored hair, spikes, jean vests, brash Preppy- goodi goodie, pop music, AE, Abrocrombie, slutty, cheerleader/jocks Emo- suicidal, depressed, whiny

And alot of time, the info thought, when thinking about these people could often be very wrong.

Goths are no different than anyone else. they have their own liking in music, their own lil groups, their own lil social events. Some may live very different lifestyles, but if you were to give one a chance, and sit and talk with one, you may be surprised what you learn

Now I leave you with a FOX NEWS interview with Voltaire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bXI5FJz3FE
