You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American. So an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is,... so they would know when they found one.
How would you define an American?

An American is anyone from the United States Of America. Don't complicate it in order to exclude yourself from the list. If you live here, you are one. Thats it. End of story.

An American is someone from America Someone who lives in Brazil is not considered American even if they like the USA. So many Americans (going by my definition, here) try to say that an American is anyone who is truly proud of who they are and who helps the needy and who is an all-around good person. But that’s just patriotism. Do you think they don’t do similar things in other countries? Surely there are some French who think that to be French it means to be a good person, to help those in need, and to be proud of who you are. Come on, people. Being American just means you’re from the ‘States. Nothing more, nothing less.

Americans are a mob of people living in USA that believe (Firmly Believes) in the superiority of their culture, philosophy, and government. While outwardly expressing their liberal ways of thinking, they will shoot down any opinions contrary to their own, hopefully with the power of majority behind them.
Majority of Americans believe Bush is great. He was voted for second term, and was recently voted in the top 5th of "greatest American ever" by Discovery channel. Over George Washington. THIS is average American.
An American (refer to a post above somewhere) believes America is a generous nation that "helps" other country in need. I see money driven nation that will only "help" if its profitable. How else will generous America pay all of its foreign debts?

Americans also believe in policing the world. Afterall, who else have the power to do it? Although America owns a vast amount of weapons of mass destruction, they will not allow any other countries to have it. Infact, they will RAPE a weaker country for suspect of having a couple.
In seriousness though, this is a good thing. WMD is very dangerous to the whole world in wrong hands. Nevermind the fact that US is the ONLY country in the world to ever deploy atomic weapon, wiping out civilization in 2 very populated cities, killing civillians and all. Who cares? Just two cities. Bombing on pearlharbor (military base) was much much more tragic than that.
America has a deep root of generosity by the way. Its all in the history. American Indians were very generous in helping the settlers with food, supplies, welcoming them in the beginning, but they turned on the Americans! Early Americans showed how generous they are by not killing all of them, but allowing them to live peacefully in designated "reservations".

How to recognize an AmericanVoted for by Mary O.
“An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, Pakistani, Afghan.
An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.
An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God. An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.
An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was overrun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.
Americans welcome the best, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. I’ve been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.
So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.”

If Americans were so great as some posters mention, I wonder why so much of the world hates them? I get it. They're all just jealous. No, wait. Is it just the "Axis of evil" people that hate Americans? You KNOW evil people hate good people.

It's Just a WordVoted for by david13.
"American" is just a word to categorize a segment of the world's population that lives on a certain land mass that was named after a map maker, Amerigo Vespucci. The name, however, can-- and does-- conjure up images in one's mind of what one generalizes an "American" to be. Today, that usually means a bible-toting, flag-waving white male who places God above all in words but places money above all in practice.
