What is Normal

Can you compare normal to anything. We’re all just weird.

  • Nothing

I don’t think anything is normal. We have nothing to compare normal to. Everything has to be weird. Who has the right to even say what is normal? It would only be normal to the person who thinks it’s normal. To everyone else it is weird.

  • Fitting in - A lesson from high school

Normal is what you THINK everyone else is like. They probably aren't that way, but you TRY to become like what you think they are, so you'll fit in. They do the same thing, and we end up with a bunch of zombies walking out of school.

I wish I could agree with the other opinions in this topic, but that was and is very much not what I see happening in groups.

  • Two meanings...

To the open-minded, you are normal if you act upon yourself as an individual. Not caring what others think. In simple terms, being yourself. Who you are.

To the closed-minded, you are normal if you are just like them. Or if you disgusie yourself so you can be popularized and "in" with the crowd.

    I am the open-minded.

  • Normal doesn't exist...

what does normal mean? like everyone else. everyone is unique. therefore, normal does not exist.

(that's my philosophical point of view, but then there's the scientific p.o.v. where normal is the central tendency of the bell curve of the population - and for that I blame stats class! lol)

  • Normal is a Variable

Normal is what you believe it is, and what he believes it is, and what she believes it is, and that guy over there too.

Something that is Normal to you, isnt normal to her. Something normal to her isnt normal to him. Etc. Normal is what *you* are comfortable with. Its an individual emotion, reaction, etc.

  • Normal changes
Normal is what is accepted by the majority of people at a particular time. It is constantly changing. It was once abnormal for women to wear pants, work certain jobs, that has now changed. It was normal for men to wear dresses, everyone wore robes, try doing that now, and walking down a street. It was considered a mental disorder to be homosexual, that is no longer true. It is forever evolving.

  • Normal is strange,

normal is strange simply because everyone is different, inside I know me and you know you, in order to establish normality , we would have to find a common factor in an overwhelming majority of people, there is no such factor, except maybe self interest and large egos, then we could perhaps concider conceit and selfishness normal, the question then would become, can we then concider normal a desirable trait?

  • Words mean things

Normal has to exist as a concept, otherwise there wouldn't be a word "normal". You can argue till you're blue in the face that everyone's unique and it's all what you want to be normal, yet you still use the words "normal" and "weird" or "abnormal" to describe something that actually must exist, otherwise you wouldn't have any word to describe it. If there exists a concept of "normal" then there must be a presupposed standard of ideals which mark something as "normal" or "abnormal".

There is "normal" and "abnormal" in the natural world. The Law of Gravity for example describes the normal behaviour of objects in relation to earth: they are drawn towards it - they fall when they are dropped. All natural laws are the same. The process of photosynthesis is a description of normal behaviour in plants - they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. It's when they stop doing what they are supposed to be doing that they are considered "abnormal". A weird occurrence would be if objects stopped obeying the law of gravity and started floating around in the air. If a plant stopped following the process of photosynthesis it would die before it was supposed to - and abnormal occurence. Sure these things do happen (well maybe not the floating thing) but they are not what should be happening and so are "abnormal".

If we look then at human beings with natural processes in mind, normality is what we are supposed to be doing. The downfall of course is what are we supposed to be doing. Maybe we don't agree that there are certain things that we SHOULD be doing. But maybe looking at what we consider abnormal would give us a clue. For example; Abuse of children is not "normal" behaviour whether or not the perpetrator can justify it in their own mind. That is why we punish those people. We don't say, "Oh, well if it's what you believe is OK then that's alright, you can go free." People all over the world no matter their backgrounds or beliefs would be horrified. We can't just pretend that because we all have different personalities that we don't all instinctively follow a standard of behaviour ingrained in us from birth. Just wait until someone tries to cheat you out of something, or trips you up without reason, and then see how "normal" you can justify their behaviour to be.

  • WHAT IS NORMAL?

Normal, What Is Or Isn't Normal, To Whom? If Not For Yourself, Then Who is It For That You Try To Decipher The Different Kinds Of Each, Never Really Figuring Them Out, For Each One In Itself Is Different To Each One Of Us As Individuals.

EACH ONES QUEST FOR NORMALATY IS THE ENDLESS SEARCH FOR SELF DISCOVERY, IN A SENSE, DOES ANYONE TRULY FEEL NORMAL, & DOES ANYONE TRULY FIND THEMSELVES.

IS ANYONE TRULY BRAVE ENOUGH TO DIG DEEP WITHIN THEMSELVES, AS DEEP AS IT TAKES FOR THE KNOLEDGE, THAT ONE NEEDS FOR SELF DISCOVERY, WITHOUT BEING AFRAID OF WHAT THEY FIND THEY ARE TRULY CAPABLE OF AS HUMANBEINGS.

WE & WE ALONE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE WHAT WE FEEL ISN’T NORMAL IN OUR LIFE. IF WE DO WANT TO CHANGE WHAT ISN’T NORMAL WHY DO MOST OF US PROCRASTANATE, & PUT IT OFF UNTIL MOST OF THE TIME IT’S TO LATE, & SOME OF US ARE CONTENT WITH WHAT WE AS INDIVIDUALS FEEL IS NOT NORMAL. WHY?

BASICALLY IT’S A CONFLICT WITHIN YOURSELF WETHER OR NOT TO TAKE THE CHANCE, & CHANGE THE WRONGS TO FINALLY HAVE PIECE OF MIND OR SPEND A LIFETIME SEARCHING FOR YOURSELF. SOME WILL BE SUCCESFULL, & SOME WILL DIE DISSAPOINTED, ONLY TO BE REBORN JUST TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, BUT IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER ANYWAY BECAUSE IN THE END WE ALL DIE……..
