Some people believe that this is good because it helps shy people communicate more openly with others.
Others beilieve that computer communication prevents us from developing interpersonal skills (people skills) and limits our ability to have meaningful relationships with others.
Does it hurt people skills, or help to develope them?

Yes.I could understand ether side, but I'll say yes is does. Most professionals that I've spoken with as far as communications agree that the main piece of communication, anywhere from 60-80% is non-verbal. That means its not just in your word choice but your tone, facial expressions, body language, ect. With social electronics such as text messaging and email we cant send or recieve those signs.50% Voted for by SenseiRidgway, NoeL-, GinryuStargazer.

Yes and NoAs Ridge said, so much of communication is done non-verbally. Or even with tone of voice! This can't be entirely mimicked online.33% Voted for by Weydon, GinryuStargazer.
But it's not bad either. It can be a "baby step" for the immensely shy. They shouldn't get stuck there, but let's face it, before computers the immensely shy rarely took that bold step into charisma anyway. I think building SOME social skills online has a better chance at helping than not at all.
It would be like saying "Does playing poker online prepare you for for playing poker in real life?" Of course it does! You will be much more familiar with the rules and the odds. But playing in real life adds a whole new element. You will be much more nervous without practice, people will probably be able to see right through you, and you won't be so fantastic at seeing through them. It gives you something, but it can't be considered a perfect substitute.
